Google is replacing every existing Android emoji with a new three-dimensional set called Noto 3D, a sweeping redesign that touches nearly 4,000 icons. Announced during Google’s Android Show, the update shifts the long-running Noto emoji family away from flat, minimalist graphics toward richly rendered 3D characters. Where past Android emojis relied on solid colors and simple shapes, Noto 3D introduces depth, shading, and textured surfaces that make each icon feel more like a tangible object than a digital sticker. Google frames the change as a way to add “a touch of physicality” to everyday messaging, arguing that earlier designs could “fall flat” when users tried to convey nuance or emotion. What Noto 3D Emojis Look Like in Practice
Noto 3D takes familiar emoji concepts and reimagines them with more personality and visual depth. Expressions now appear sculpted rather than drawn: a laughing face looks as if it could roll off the screen, and hearts appear weighty and almost touchable. Rollout Plan: Pixel First, Then Wider Android Adoption
Google plans a staged rollout for Noto 3D emojis, with Pixel devices at the front of the line. The company says Pixel phones will receive the new emoji set later this year, aligning with the broader launch of Android 17. After that, Noto 3D is expected to expand across Google’s wider ecosystem, including services such as Gmail, Google Messages, Chrome, and general Android builds. However, the timing for non-Pixel phones is less straightforward. Many manufacturers—such as those that ship their own custom interfaces—maintain distinct emoji styles, meaning they must actively adopt or adapt Noto 3D. App developers who rely on system fonts will also need to update their platforms to ensure consistent rendering. As a result, users may see a staggered transition where Pixel owners enjoy the new set first, while other Android devices catch up over time.
