How Siri AI differs from the old Siri
Old Siri was mostly a command-and-response tool: set a timer, send a text, check the weather. Siri AI shifts to an ongoing, context-rich assistant that remembers what you are talking about during a session and can combine information from your apps, files, and the web. According to Apple, the new assistant runs on Apple Foundation Models built “in deep collaboration with Google using Gemini,” with heavier queries sent to cloud infrastructure when they are too large for on-device or Private Cloud Compute processing. Unlike earlier versions, Siri AI has its own app with synced chat history across devices, optional expiration for conversations, and a prominent role inside Spotlight on Mac and a system-wide writing layer on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. In short, Siri moves from a thin voice layer to a core Apple Intelligence service woven deeply into the operating systems.
Strategic shift: privacy, partnerships, and AI positioning
Siri AI also signals a strategic shift in how Apple talks about AI. Craig Federighi named Apple Intelligence as one of three pillars for the new software cycle and stressed privacy as a selling point, saying, “Data is only used to execute your request, and outside experts can continue to verify this promise at any time.” At the same time, Apple is more open about partnerships, reportedly paying Google for access to a large Gemini model that runs on Nvidia Blackwell GPUs in Google Cloud for the heaviest queries. This mix of on-device Apple Foundation Models, Private Cloud Compute, and external cloud support allows Apple to claim privacy-by-design while still matching the scale of competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. Rollout, compatibility, and what users should expect
Siri AI ships as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 “Golden Gate,” watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27, with a beta initially limited to devices set to English. Apple confirmed that iOS 27 runs on every iPhone that supported iOS 26, extending Apple Intelligence features, performance gains, and the new Siri capabilities even to older models like iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE. On iPhone, you open Siri AI by swiping down on the Dynamic Island to reveal a unified “Search or Ask” field; on Mac, it is built into Spotlight and has a dedicated app and menu-bar icon. Some Siri AI features will have daily use limits, with higher quotas for iCloud+ subscribers. Due to current regulatory constraints, the assistant will not appear on iPhone or iPad in some regions at launch, though users there can still try Siri AI on Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro.
