For anyone who already bought into AM5, the message is clear: you still have years of viable Ryzen CPU upgrade path ahead, including a likely final high-end step with Zen 7 on the same boards.
AM6 and Zen 8: DDR6 Memory and PCIe 6.0 Change the Rules
The reason Zen 7 is expected to close out AM5 is simple: AMD reserves new sockets for big memory and I/O leaps. Zen 8 is projected to introduce DDR6 on desktop, which requires a new memory controller and, in turn, a new platform—AM6—for both EPYC and Ryzen families. Alongside DDR6, AM6 will bring native PCIe 6.0 support, building on the fact that PCIe Gen 6 already exists on current server platforms. While PCIe 6.0 support on consumer hardware will initially offer limited visible gains—much like the bump from PCIe 4.0 to 5.0—the combination of DDR6 and next-gen I/O defines a clean architectural break. Current AM5 motherboards will not support future Zen 8 processors because AM6 will be a different socket tuned around DDR6 and PCIe 6.0 from day one.
