What ChatGPT’s 1 Billion-User Milestone Really Means
ChatGPT’s 1 billion monthly active users milestone refers to the chatbot becoming the fastest mobile application in history to reach one billion people using it in a single month, highlighting both its dominant market presence and the accelerating global adoption of consumer-facing artificial intelligence tools. Sensor Tower data shows ChatGPT passed 1 billion monthly mobile users in May, roughly three years after launch, outpacing the historical growth of Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. This “ChatGPT billion users” moment cements the app as the default entry point for many people into AI. Yet the headline figure also masks a more complex story: user growth is slowing in percentage terms, rivals are scaling fast, and attention is starting to fragment across multiple chatbots. The race is shifting from pure acquisition to depth of engagement, user stickiness, and revenue per subscriber.

Claude’s 640% Growth: Small Base, Big Signal
While ChatGPT dominates in absolute size, Anthropic’s Claude is setting the pace in relative growth and sharpening “AI chatbot competition.” Claude has about 56 million global monthly active users, far smaller than ChatGPT, but its user base expanded roughly 640% year over year compared with ChatGPT’s 62%. That kind of growth, even off a small base, signals that Claude AI growth is turning it into a serious contender. Sensor Tower found that users who installed Claude in the first quarter spent 5% less time on ChatGPT a month later, suggesting some people are splitting their time between assistants instead of staying loyal to one. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have confidentially moved toward IPOs, which will push investors to compare growth rates, engagement, and monetization more closely than ever. One app is enormous and steady; the other is multiplying fast and chipping at the leader’s attention.
Download Share Shrinks as ChatGPT Leans on Stickiness
ChatGPT’s position is shifting from land-grab to defense. According to Sensor Tower, ChatGPT downloads grew 190% year over year in 2024 and 2025, driving it to roughly 900 million global monthly active users by the end of 2025 and then 1 billion in May. But app download share is now slipping as Claude, Meta AI, and Gemini surge. Claude and Meta AI together rose from 1% of global downloads in the second quarter of 2025 to 24% in the current second quarter to date, while ChatGPT’s downloads are down year over year. Even so, ChatGPT still gets triple the downloads of any single competitor and ranks at the top of major app store charts. Its insurance policy is user stickiness: 44% of monthly users open the app daily, a high engagement level that helps protect ChatGPT market share even as newcomers win a larger slice of new installs.
Usage Patterns: Free Habits vs Paying Power Users
Behind the headline user numbers, usage intensity shows how ChatGPT converts habit into revenue. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar disclosed that free users average about seven queries a day, while those on the first paid tier double that to around fifteen. ChatGPT Plus subscribers, paying USD 20 (approx. RM92) per month, log roughly three times as many queries as free users, and Pro-tier customers show eleven times the engagement of a free user. In her words, “Once they get a taste of intelligence, the ability to come up a commitment curve is incredible.” This pattern suggests free access is an effective gateway: once people discover enough value, they climb to higher tiers and use the tool in a more always-on way. The challenge is to maintain that funnel as competitors offer their own free and premium AI experiences.
Monetization, Ads, and the Next Phase of AI Chatbot Competition
Scale and engagement are now feeding into aggressive monetization. ChatGPT has become one of the highest-earning mobile apps, with nearly USD 1.5 billion (approx. RM6.9 billion) in net in-app purchase revenue in 2026 to date, while Claude has generated USD 163 million (approx. RM749 million) over the same period. OpenAI has also moved into advertising: ChatGPT ads reached about 20% of app users by the end of May, up from about 1% in early March, and ad density per user rose 60% between February and May. Over 1,500 brands have already run more than 10,000 unique ads on the platform. At the same time, OpenAI has become one of the largest software advertisers, as generative AI ad spend has grown 12x year over year. The next stage of the ChatGPT billion users story will be judged less on raw scale and more on sustainable revenue and resilience against Claude AI growth.
