Wearables Were Sold as Services—Now Users Are Cracking Them Open
The current fight over Whoop bands and independent apps is about who controls a wearable’s core features: the company that sold the hardware, the regulator that polices its health claims, or the user who wears it every day. Third-party wearable apps like Noop, Goose, and Wearable are turning locked, subscription-first trackers into open devices, while recent FDA wearable enforcement decisions show how fragile those locks can be.
Whoop’s business is built on a subscription: you pay around USD 239 (approx. RM1,100) per year for analysis rather than for the band itself, which stays dumb without an active Whoop wearable subscription. The company’s pitch is clear: the hardware, cloud processing, and proprietary metrics form one integrated platform, and its API only opens up after your data flows through Whoop’s servers and membership system. That model made sense when the alternative was throwing old Whoop 4.0 bands into a drawer or the trash. But as hobbyists show that a bit of Bluetooth Low Energy decoding can revive those devices, the idea that features must live behind a paywall is starting to look more like a business choice than a technical necessity.
Noop, Goose, and the Rise of Wearable Workarounds
Independent developers have spent years poking at Whoop’s Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, but the recent wave of tools like Noop, Goose, and Wearable is the first to feel like a real alternative to the official app. A hobbyist app appeared a few weeks ago that could connect to an old Whoop 4.0 strap, followed by newer projects that quickly spread through Reddit and GitHub. On June 2, another developer announced Goose, explicitly targeting the newer 5.0 and MG bands, and hinting at a world where your strap can be useful even if Whoop never sees your data.
These third-party wearable apps share a simple goal: read sensor data directly from the strap over Bluetooth and store or display it without going through Whoop’s servers or billing system. Because if a free app can read the device’s data over Bluetooth, you can use the hardware for your own purposes without the Whoop app or subscription service. That instantly turns abandoned straps—often upgraded from 4.0 to 5.0 for free—into useful devices instead of e-waste. In effect, these tools are wearable device workarounds, letting users reclaim ownership of hardware they already paid for, and redefining what “membership” ought to buy: not access to the device, but to added-value insights.
Who Owns the Features: Device Makers vs. Coders vs. Regulators
Whoop is not pretending to be thrilled about all this. The company explicitly says that it supports third-party app development only through its official developer APIs, and warns that “not all third-party apps or independent tools are created, reviewed, or authorized” by the company. When projects stray beyond the sanctioned path, Whoop has acted: a spokesperson admits the company has contacted individuals to take down apps in cases that it believes violate its IP, trademarks, or terms of use. One early browser-based tool, Whoomp, vanished from GitHub after Whoop’s vice president of software personally asked the developer to pull the code.
This is where the tension becomes more than a private spat between enthusiasts and a single brand. Independent apps aim to let individuals use Whoop hardware without any contact with the company itself, and without ever having had a subscription. From the user’s perspective, these are sensible wearable device workarounds; from Whoop’s perspective, they risk diluting the value of an all-inclusive subscription and blurring responsibility if something goes wrong. The result is an awkward three-way tug-of-war: developers proving that locked hardware can be opened, companies asserting contractual and IP control, and regulators watching closely once claims inch toward health territory rather than generic wellness.

The FDA’s Blood Pressure Retreat: A Warning Label, Not a Green Light
The same struggle over control is playing out at the regulatory level. Last August, the FDA contacted Whoop about concerns with its blood pressure analysis on the MG band, triggering nearly a year of negotiation over how far a wearable can go before it becomes a regulated medical device. The MG model, offered under a “Life” plan starting at USD 359 (approx. RM1,720) a year, relies on users taking an initial reading with a proper inflatable blood pressure cuff and then extrapolates changes from other sensor data. Whoop pushed back on the FDA’s warning and never disabled blood pressure support while the talks continued.
According to one report, the FDA has now formally agreed that Whoop can continue offering its blood pressure tool, so long as the app removes labels that classify readings as normal or elevated and reframes the feature as providing wellness insights rather than any kind of medical diagnosis. The agency has also said it will not take enforcement action against Whoop, nearly a year after its original warning over the blood pressure tracker. For users, that means the looming threat that blood pressure tracking might be removed from their subscription is gone, and the feature lives on as a slightly rebranded wellness metric rather than a quasi-medical claim.

What Users Should Want Next: Openness Over Gatekeeping
Taken together, independent Whoop-compatible apps and the FDA’s decision not to enforce against Whoop’s blood pressure tracker point toward a simple conclusion: users benefit when both business models and regulations bend in favor of access instead of control. If a free app can keep a Whoop 4.0 alive as a heart-rate tracker without a Whoop wearable subscription, many people will gladly give up some polished insights to keep their data local and their hardware useful. And if a wellness-labeled blood pressure estimate can stay available under light-touch blood pressure tracker regulation, subscribers keep a valuable trend indicator instead of losing it in a compliance purge.
The most intriguing twist is what happens if an open-source project like Goose adds its own blood pressure estimation, “offering this data without such a financial burden.” That would throw the contrast into sharp relief: one ecosystem where hardware, software, and data are inseparable, and another where your strap is just a sensor and you decide who interprets it. Wearables will always need safety boundaries, and regulators must act when claims cross into medicine. But when both companies and agencies treat features as something to gate rather than something to explain, they should not be surprised when users vote with their Bluetooth settings—and choose the apps that let their devices do what they were built to do.
