A standout is virtual or “neural” handwriting: using the Neural Band controller, users can sketch letters in the air to write messages across WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and even native Android and iOS texting apps. This gesture-based augmented reality handwriting blurs the line between physical movement and digital text input. Meta is also rolling out live captions inside the glasses for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, plus voice message captions on Instagram, helping make spoken interactions more accessible. Navigation has been upgraded too, with walking directions now available across a much wider footprint, including major international cities. A new display recording mode captures the lens display, the real-world view, and ambient audio in a single clip, designed for quick sharing to social platforms.
How Developers Will Build the Next Wave of Smart Glasses Apps
Meta is offering two primary paths for developers to build on its smart glasses: web and mobile. On the web side, developers can create new tools as Web Apps using familiar technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, then surface them on the glasses via simple URLs instead of a traditional app store. Meta imagines experiences ranging from games and transit tools to cooking guides, grocery lists, and instrument practice. For mobile-focused developers, the Wearables Device Access Toolkit allows existing apps to be ported to the glasses by reusing UI components such as buttons, images, text, and video playback. Crucially, the Neural Band controller is exposed as an input method, letting developers incorporate gesture controls similar to Meta’s own augmented reality handwriting feature. This approach lowers friction, encouraging experimentation and faster iteration as the ecosystem of third-party smart glasses apps starts to form.
Competing with Emerging AI Glasses and the Chinese Hardware Push
Meta’s platform play is as much a competitive move as a technical one. Many of these devices are built from the ground up as open platforms, giving developers a central role in shaping the user experience.
