Samsung Display is developing CTG, or Center Etched Thin Glass, a new take on the ultra-thin glass display used in foldable OLED panels. Instead of making the entire sheet the same thickness, CTG reportedly thins only the narrow strip that bends every time you open and close the phone, while leaving the rest of the panel thicker and more rigid. That sounds like a small tweak, but it attacks the foldable phone crease at its source. One of the biggest reasons foldable phones develop visible creases over time is that the center of the display repeatedly absorbs the most stress.

By letting the middle section flex more naturally, CTG should reduce that stress and slow the formation of permanent creases. This is the kind of quiet engineering fix that matters more than flashy features. It promises a screen that looks fresher for longer and could also open the door to thinner and lighter devices without sacrificing durability. Competition in the foldable market is heating up, with rivals reportedly working on their own ways to minimize creasing, but CTG shows Samsung is done treating the crease as an inevitability. It is treating it as a design flaw to be engineered away.

The wider Samsung Z Fold 8 finally feels like a tablet in your pocket

Even if the crease disappeared tomorrow, a tall, narrow foldable would still feel compromised. The Samsung Z Fold 8 fixes that by going wider. The phone is noticeably shorter than the Fold 8 Ultra but much wider, with a 10:16 cover display and a 4:3 inner canvas. While wider foldables have existed before, the technology has matured. This matters more than it might sound. Android apps have never been perfectly tuned for every screen size, and foldables stretch that reality to the limit. Instead of waiting for every developer to optimize layouts, Samsung is handing some control back to users. How apps respond on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 was a real concern when it debuted, but hands-on use shows that apps “resize well,” and this fine-grained zoom tool should make edge cases even rarer.
