Those procedural results are not a black box: sculpting tools and straightforward editing commands sit on top of the system, letting artists refine key areas without losing the benefits of rule-based generation. Because the editor is built to accept meshes created in external modeling tools and is fully compatible with Nanite, high-detail assets keep their fidelity even at distance. Lumen, MegaLights and Faster Lighting Iteration
Lighting is often where large worlds grind to a halt, with rebuilds and performance tuning draining production time. In Unreal Engine 5.8, Epic continues to mature Lumen global illumination and brings its MegaLights system to production-ready status, giving teams better control over lighting complexity without sacrificing detail. MegaLights has been described as a ‘Nanite of lights’ in previous releases, and in 5.8 it gains improved performance and stability for real projects.
