The new Siri AI overhaul is a complete rebuild of Apple’s assistant as a system-wide intelligence layer that combines on-device models, private cloud processing, and Apple-controlled world knowledge to deliver context-aware help tightly integrated with iOS 27. Instead of acting like a gateway to external chatbots, Siri is now a dedicated app woven into the operating system, with a “system orchestrator” that routes each request to the right Apple Foundation Model on the device or in Private Cloud Compute. This architecture lets Siri understand what you are doing in apps, draw on personal content, and still keep sensitive data local whenever possible. For more complex, agent-like tasks, Siri can escalate to Apple’s AFM Cloud Pro model, treating cloud access as an extension of the device rather than a separate service. The goal is to make Siri the primary assistant that users live with, not a secondary shortcut to other AI tools.

Inside Apple’s New On‑Device Intelligence
Apple’s strategy centers on on-device intelligence as the default brain of the iOS 27 assistant. AFM Core and AFM Core Advanced run directly on Apple silicon, handling fast dictation, Siri’s expressive new voice, and many day-to-day queries without leaving the device. A system orchestrator evaluates each request, deciding whether local models are enough or whether to call on AFM Cloud, AFM Cloud Image, or AFM Cloud Pro for heavier work. When the cloud is needed, requests go through Private Cloud Compute, which Apple describes as extending the iPhone’s privacy model to the server side so that even Apple cannot inspect user data. By treating on-device AI as the first stop and cloud models as specialized backup, Apple is framing Siri as an assistant that knows your personal context while keeping that context under tight local control instead of sending it routinely to external services.
Why the Apple–Gemini Partnership Doesn’t Make Siri a Clone
The Apple Gemini partnership has led many observers to assume Siri is now a thin Gemini wrapper, but Apple’s leadership is pushing back. At a post-keynote briefing, Craig Federighi stressed that Apple does not ship the Gemini app, does not use Google’s client code, and does not call Gemini Flash, Gemini Pro, or Google Assistant in production. According to PCMag, Federighi told reporters: “When it comes to our system, we use none of those things.” Instead, Google’s role sits upstream in training and infrastructure. Apple’s AI chief Amar Subramanya explained that Apple Foundation Models were refined using outputs from Gemini frontier models via reinforcement learning, allowing Siri to inherit some of Gemini’s strengths without importing Google’s models or deployment stack. For AFM Cloud Pro, Apple also runs on Nvidia GPUs in Google’s cloud, but data stays inside Apple’s Private Cloud Compute environment, with Apple’s privacy rules in charge.
Personal Context and Deep Integration Make Siri a Primary Assistant
Apple wants the iOS 27 assistant to feel less like a chatbot and more like a built-in coworker that understands your digital life. The rebuilt Siri sits as a dedicated app with deeper hooks into system services, notifications, and everyday apps, so it can keep track of conversations, documents, and tasks across the phone. Because AFM Core models live on-device, Siri can work with personal content and context without sending it to external providers, aligning with Apple’s privacy-first positioning and making it more natural to trust Siri with calendar details, messages, or photos. This deep integration is what differentiates Siri from standalone Gemini or other web-first assistants, which often operate in isolated apps. By combining personal context, on-device intelligence, and selective use of cloud models trained with help from Gemini, Apple is trying to reposition Siri from a backup option to the main way people interact with Apple Intelligence across their devices.
