Steady Hands: Stabilizing Art for People with Tremors
One of the standout projects, Steady Hands, shows how AI-driven signal processing can restore confidence for people with hand tremors. Created by student developer Gayatri Goundadkar, the app playground uses Apple Pencil stabilization along with PencilKit and the Accelerate framework to analyze stroke data in real time. By distinguishing intentional motion from involuntary tremors, the system removes unwanted shake while preserving artistic expression. Goundadkar also built a tool to capture raw motion data and characterize tremors by frequency and intensity, enabling personalized calibration for each user. The interface is deliberately calm and approachable to make technology feel less intimidating for older adults. Finished drawings are presented in a personal 3D museum so users are treated as artists, not patients. This thoughtful blend of AI analysis, accessible design, and creative presentation illustrates how student-led mobile app development education can produce nuanced assistive technology innovation that prioritizes dignity as much as functionality.
Pitch Coach: Real-Time Presentation Feedback Powered by AI
Another Distinguished Winner, Anton Baranov, tackled a different accessibility gap: the anxiety and performance barriers that come with public speaking. His app playground, pitch coach, acts as an “Apple Intelligence-powered wingman” for presentations and pitch sessions. Built with Swift and Apple’s Foundation Models framework, the app listens to a speaker’s delivery and provides real-time feedback, helping users “catch themselves in the act” when posture slips or filler words creep in. After each session, pitch coach generates context-aware summaries and highlights specific habits, such as frequent use of “like” or “um.” Baranov also used AI assistance in development, translating the app into 20 languages with a Claude Agent in Xcode and working with peers to identify filler words across languages. Released on the App Store, pitch coach has already attracted thousands of users, who use it not only for presentations but also for practicing rap and comedy, underscoring the versatility of AI accessibility solutions.
Asuo and Beyond: Navigating Hazards and Expanding Assistive Tools
Flood safety inspired another winning accessibility project, Asuo, created by Karen-Happuch Peprah Henneh. Motivated by recurring floods in her community and limited local coding opportunities, she turned to Swift to design a real-time pathfinding tool that helps people avoid dangerous flood zones. By combining mapping logic and situational awareness, Asuo shows how student developers can channel lived experience into practical, potentially life-saving tools. Other Distinguished Winners explored different forms of assistance: one app simulates playing a viola without a physical instrument, broadening access to music education, while another focuses on drawing on iPad without worrying about tremors. Together, these projects demonstrate the breadth of assistive technology innovation emerging from the Swift Student Challenge. They also highlight how accessible development environments lower the barrier to entry, allowing students who are new to Swift to quickly start building prototypes that respond directly to the risks, frustrations, and aspirations they see around them.
