Instead of a horizontal shelf and a tablet glued in the middle, the Type 01 goes longitudinal, letting a full-length brass-inspired spine divide the cabin into four personal pods. The firm has revealed this interior ahead of the car’s full production unveiling in New York on October 6, which will mark its first production model since a controversial rebrand and a pause in new-car sales. This is Jaguar staking its future on drama.
The central spine: a bold rejection of the family hatchback playbook
Where most luxury EV cabin design still borrows from family cars, the Jaguar Type 01 interior behaves more like a gallery installation than a conventional cockpit. The huge center spine, finished in warm tones reminiscent of travertine and brass, runs the full length of the cabin and cuts the floorplan into four distinct pods. This strict four-seater layout, despite the car’s outlandish dimensions, is a deliberate choice: Jaguar is sacrificing the middle rear perch to make every seat feel like a first-class pod. Comparing the production interior to the Type 00 concept, the overall shape of the seats, spine and steering wheel has stayed similar, but the finishes now look more comfortable and production-ready. In a market that worships flexibility and family practicality, this spine is a statement that this GT exists to indulge four people, not to haul five.
Hidden tech and minimalist car design: luxury by subtraction
Jaguar has understood that in modern electric car interior technology, the bravest move is often restraint. The Type 01 has no giant central tablet, no passenger-side cinema screen and no wall of glowing pixels. Driving data and navigation live in a dedicated screen ahead of the steering wheel, while a new ClearSight display sits at the base of the windscreen, replacing the traditional rear-view mirror with camera footage from the back of the car. Climate and audio are handled by a compact, smartphone-sized touchscreen perched on the center spine, rather than dominating the dashboard. Jaguar even promises "hidden-until-needed" technology and secret compartments, hinting that some of its old theatrical tricks will return in an electric age. This is minimalist car design with intent: the monolithic dashboard, stitched to the controversial exterior via the “strikethrough” motif, is meant to look calm even when 1,000-plus horsepower is on tap.
Beige, low-slung and unapologetically GT
The Jaguar Type 01 interior is not trying to be a Scandinavian living room on wheels. Instead, the beige color palette and warm materials emphasize its grand tourer proportions: long, low and tailored. Both front occupants sit in a low driving position that shrinks the cockpit around the driver, aiming to build confidence when those three electric motors deliver more than 1,000 horsepower and 959 lb ft of torque on Jaguar’s bespoke JEA architecture. The spine and “strikethrough” line visually tie the bonnet venting to the dashboard, turning the whole car into a single architectural object rather than a body with a cabin dropped in. The result feels closer to a concept car that slipped through unchanged than a watered-down production saloon – which is precisely the image Jaguar wants for its ultra-luxury reboot.
Escaping the EV appliance trap: will the risk pay off?
Any notion of a traditional cabin went out the window when Jaguar committed to this radical interior, and that decision carries real risk. The brand has slashed its dealer network and temporarily stopped selling new cars while it prepares for this relaunch, so the Type 01 has to do more than look striking. It must prove that drama still matters in a luxury EV world drowning in silent appliances with identical stats and similar looks. Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s managing director, sums up the ambition: "With a confidence-inspiring GT driving position, clean and sophisticated technology and dramatic styling, Type 01 has an interior like no other." If buyers embrace a travertine-and-brass spine, strict four-seat layout and hidden tech, Jaguar may well rewrite the modern luxury playbook. If they reject it, the brand will at least have gone down swinging, not whispering.
