Microsoft Finally Lets You Banish Copilot’s Floating Button and Reclaim Your Office Workspace

Why the Copilot Button Suddenly Took Over Your Screen

If you use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, you have probably noticed a floating Copilot button camped at the bottom-right of your document. Microsoft introduced this Copilot Dynamic Action Button (DAB) in an effort to boost engagement with its AI assistant, after seeing that only a small fraction of Microsoft 365 users were actually paying for Copilot. Making the Copilot button more prominent did increase clicks, but it also sparked a wave of complaints. In Excel especially, the floating Copilot button often obscured key cells and even hid important data, with no simple way to dismiss it. Feedback portals filled up with frustrated users describing the icon as intrusive and infuriating. In response, Microsoft is rolling out new Office customization settings that give you back control over where the Copilot button lives—or whether it appears at all.

How to Move the Floating Copilot Button Back to the Ribbon

With the latest Office update, you can now move the Copilot button off your document canvas and into the ribbon toolbar. In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, simply right-click the floating Copilot bubble and select “Move to ribbon.” The icon instantly jumps from the bottom-right corner back to the top bar, where it behaves like a standard command. If you change your mind later, right-click the Copilot button on the ribbon and choose “Move out of ribbon” to restore the floating version. This quick toggle is ideal if you still want fast access to Copilot but hate having it hover over your content. For many users, putting the Copilot button on the ribbon strikes a balance between discoverability and a clean workspace, especially in dense spreadsheets or slide layouts.

Dock, Hide, or Disable: All Your Copilot Placement Options

The new ribbon move is only one piece of a broader shift toward flexible Copilot placement in Office apps. You can still dock Copilot as a sidebar on the right, which shrinks its footprint and keeps it from blocking your document. Previously, this docked view would reset each time you reopened a file; now, once docked, the button stays put for the entire session, so you do not have to repeatedly hide it. If you prefer a more stripped-down interface, you can go further. In Office’s File > Options > Copilot menu, you can disable Copilot features or hide the Copilot button from the ribbon using standard customization tools. For maximum privacy and minimal AI presence, you can also turn off “experiences that analyze your content” in Office’s privacy settings, effectively shutting down AI‑driven assistance.

What This Change Says About Microsoft’s AI Strategy

These new Copilot controls mark a significant retreat from Microsoft’s earlier strategy of pushing AI into every corner of Office. After a year of aggressive rollouts—floating bubbles, persistent icons, and deeply embedded shortcuts—user backlash forced a reconsideration. Microsoft has already removed or scaled back Copilot integrations in apps like Paint, Notepad, Photos, and Snipping Tool, and is now dialing back its most intrusive Office placements. Executives have acknowledged that while the floating Copilot button did increase engagement, users want control over how AI appears in their workspace. Moving the Copilot button to the ribbon, letting it stay docked, and offering clear ways to disable Copilot Office features all shift Copilot from a billboard into a tool. The message is clear: AI should fit around your workflow, not force your workflow to fit around AI.
