Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8, also referred to as the Wide Fold, has appeared in the FCC database under model number SM-F971U, confirming it as a book-style foldable type mobile phone with a large inner display and a smaller outer screen. According to Android Authority, the filing mentions Wi‑Fi 7, NFC, UWB, wireless and reverse wireless charging, satellite capabilities (NB‑NTN) and DisplayPort support, and it uses Qualcomm’s modem and Smart Transmit technology, strongly indicating a Snapdragon processor inside. Earlier leaks point to a 4,800mAh battery, 45W wired charging, two 50MP rear cameras and a weight of about 200 grams, paired with a squat cover display and wide folding screen that favor video playback. This combination of wide aspect ratio and top-tier connectivity shows Samsung refining its foldable phone designs for media, rather than shrinking a tablet use case down to pocket size.
Huawei’s Vertical Tri-Fold Patent Stacks Screens Instead of Stretching Them
Huawei’s newly surfaced patent hints at a very different path for tri-fold technology: a narrow device that grows taller instead of wider. The design uses two horizontally placed hinges that fold in opposite directions, creating three stacked segments connected by a continuous flexible display. Closed, it keeps a standard narrow smartphone footprint but becomes about three times as thick, with the top segment holding the rear cameras, the middle housing processor, battery modules and antenna components, and the bottom extending the display area while adding balance. One strip of the flexible panel stays exposed even when folded, handling notifications and controls without a separate cover screen. That exposed strip could save costs but also raises durability questions. Unlike tablet-oriented tri-folds such as Huawei’s own Mate XT, this patent leans into portrait content like short video feeds and messaging, underlining how foldable phone designs can specialize around usage patterns.

Xiaomi MIX Fold 5 and the Xuanji O3: Custom Silicon for Foldables
Xiaomi’s MIX Fold 5 is expected to be its top-of-the-line large folding phone for the second half of the year, and certification details already confirm a radio design that fully supports GSM, 5G, WLAN and Bluetooth, plus UWB technology for centimeter-level spatial positioning. The device reportedly uses an integrated horizontal rear camera module and a self-developed seamless hinge aimed at reducing the screen crease, along with side-mounted fingerprint recognition and inner and outer screens that share the same aspect ratio.
