Why Pixel Users Are Obsessed With the Disco Icon Pack
Google’s new disco icon pack transforms your Pixel phone icons into sparkling, disco ball–style designs that look like they’ve stepped straight out of a retro dance floor. The look started as a semi-viral “discomorphism” concept from designer Race Johnson, whose shimmering app icons quickly spread across tech social feeds. Android head Sameer Samat then teased, and rapidly delivered, an official take as part of Pixel Launcher’s custom icon styles. Instead of a traditional third-party icon pack, Disco is a preset that applies a glittery, ball-like treatment across your entire app library, giving even mundane apps a playful, party-ready makeover. The result is a home screen that stands out dramatically from standard Android icon themes and other Pixel phone icons. It’s bold, nostalgic, and just quirky enough that people can’t stop sharing screenshots of their disco-fied setups.

Check Your Pixel and Software Before You Start
Before you can download the disco icon pack, you’ll need a compatible Pixel running the right software. Disco lives inside the Pixel Launcher’s “Create” feature for custom app icons, which arrived with Android 16 QPR3. That update rolled out to every Pixel model from the Pixel 6 series onward, so most recent devices are covered. To confirm your version, open Settings, tap About phone, then scroll until you see Android version. If you’re on a build older than QPR3, go back to Settings, choose System, then Software updates, and tap System update to pull the latest release. Once your phone is up to date, the Disco style will appear alongside other AI-generated icon themes like Scribbles, Cookies, and Easel. You don’t need any extra apps, launchers, or third-party icon theme download — everything happens within your Pixel’s built-in customization tools.
How to Download and Apply the Disco Icons on Your Pixel
With a supported Pixel and current software, turning on the disco icon pack only takes a minute. Start on your home screen and press and hold on any blank space until the customization menu appears. Tap Wallpaper & style, then choose Icons. On the icons page, tap Create to open Google’s AI-generated icon styles. You’ll see several presets; tap Disco to preview the sparkly, disco ball look. Next, tap Download in the top-right corner. Your Pixel will fetch the assets, generate disco versions of your app icons, and add the style to the Your styles section. When the download finishes, select the Disco style and apply it. Swipe back to your home screen and app drawer, and you should see nearly every app wrapped in the new shimmering design, giving your entire icon library a cohesive disco aesthetic.
Living With Disco Icons: Customization, Limits, and Future Styles
Once applied, the disco icon pack re-skins most of your Pixel phone icons with a unified, glittering treatment on a black background. Some apps translate beautifully into the disco aesthetic, with clear shapes and fun reflections, while others can look a bit less recognizable or overly busy. Because Disco is an official Pixel Launcher style, you can toggle it on or off anytime from Wallpaper & style → Icons without affecting wallpapers or widgets. Unlike traditional third-party icon packs, you can’t fine-tune individual icons or mix styles, and Google still doesn’t let you load external packs directly into the system. Even so, the speedy rollout from viral concept to official feature shows how quickly Google can experiment with playful icon themes. If Disco is any indication, Pixel users can likely expect more creative, retro-inspired custom app icons in future updates.
