Sony has unveiled the RX10 V, a Sony RX10 V superzoom compact camera with a 24-600mm optical zoom lens and a 20.1-megapixel one-inch sensor. This is the fifth generation of its fixed-lens superzoom camera line, combining that 24-600mm equivalent zoom with AI-powered subject recognition, 30 fps continuous shooting, and 4K video at up to 120 fps. In other words, Sony is betting that a single AI autofocus camera can tempt serious shooters away from juggling mirrorless bodies and multiple lenses. Pre-orders opened at USD 2,300 (approx. RM10,580) with shipping in August, up from the RX10 IV’s launch price of around USD 1,700 (approx. RM7,820), so this is no casual point-and-shoot.

AI Autofocus Turns the RX10 V into a Smart Tracking Machine
The real story of the Sony RX10 V superzoom is not the lens we already know, but the brain now driving it. The camera keeps the 9.1-210mm (24-600mm equivalent) f2.4-4.0 ZEISS lens and pairs it with AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF driven by a new processor. A dedicated AI processing unit powers Real-time Recognition AF, which can identify people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and aircraft. This matters more than spec-sheet bragging: it answers the central complaint about older superzooms—that their autofocus fell apart when subjects moved fast or unpredictably.
AF and AE calculation speed has doubled to 60 fps for continuous tracking, and the system now offers 575 AF points (up from 315) across 70 percent of the sensor. After a subject is selected on the rear screen, Real-time Tracking follows it as it moves through the frame, even if it turns away or is partially obscured. That combination of dense AF coverage and AI subject recognition turns the RX10 V into a credible AI autofocus camera for travel wildlife photography, motorsport, or birds in flight—areas where bridge cameras once lagged far behind interchangeable-lens systems.
4K 120p Video and 30fps Stills: A Hybrid Tool, Not a Toy
If previous RX10 models were stills cameras with some video, the RX10 V flips the balance. The new processor lifts burst speeds: the camera now shoots at 30 fps with no blackout in electronic shutter mode, up from 24 fps, while keeping live view active during bursts so you can track erratic subjects. That is serious performance for wildlife or sports shooters who need to catch a wing position or critical gesture without guessing what the camera sees.
Video gets the largest upgrade. The RX10 V records 4K at 60 fps in 10-bit using the full sensor width with no pixel binning, and can push to 4K 120 fps for slow motion at a slight crop, or 1080p at 240 fps. Video can be recorded in 4K at up to 120 frames per second, enabling footage to be slowed by up to five times in post or in the camera’s slow and quick mode. S-Log3, S-Cinetone, support for up to 16 user LUTs, and improved built-in stabilization for handheld walking footage round this out into a credible hybrid rig for travel wildlife photography and field documentary work.
Handling, Limitations, and the Fixed-Lens Trade-Off
Sony has overhauled the RX10 V body to feel more like its α mirrorless cameras, with a much larger grip, joystick, dials, a control wheel, a new dual top dial, and an AF-ON button. The 3.68-million-dot OLED viewfinder and 1.62-million-dot rear display are welcome upgrades. Battery life improves thanks to the NP-FZ100, rated at approximately 630 photographs using the rear screen and 570 through the viewfinder—at least 50 percent higher than the RX10 IV on the rear screen. For long days in the field, that matters more than a marginal bump in resolution.
But the RX10 V is not perfect. Sony did not raise the resolution of the one-inch sensor, which will disappoint anyone hoping to crop a lot at 600mm. The rear screen only tilts and does not flip out, which makes it poor for vlogging or selfies at this price. Sony also removed the RX10 IV’s built-in flash, and there is only a single UHS-II SD card slot. These choices underline who this fixed lens bridge camera targets: photographers focused on travel wildlife photography and action, rather than YouTube creators or studio shooters.
Is USD 2,300 Worth It for Travel and Wildlife Shooters?
Pre-orders for the RX10 V opened at USD 2,300 (approx. RM10,580) with shipping in August. That places it among the most expensive compact cameras on the market, and invites comparison with interchangeable-lens bodies plus telephoto zooms that can outresolve a one-inch sensor for less money. The argument for the RX10 V is not absolute image quality; it is freedom from lens swapping and the weight of a multi-lens kit. As before, the RX10 V gives tourists, street shooters, and wildlife photographers enormous reach in one body.
