What Siri AI in iOS 27 Is—and Why Europe Won’t Get It
Siri AI in iOS 27 is Apple’s new system-wide assistant upgrade that combines on-device Apple Intelligence with cloud models so iPhone, iPad, and Mac can understand personal context, act across apps, and offer chat-style conversations through a dedicated app. Yet millions of users in the European Union will open iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 without it. Citing the Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple says regulators rejected every proposal to let Siri AI coexist with competing assistants while still protecting user data. Craig Federighi calls it “their refusal to engage constructively on solutions that preserve privacy and security,” and Apple now admits it has “no timeline” for Siri AI’s return on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS in the EU. Ironically, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 there will still gain Siri AI, underscoring how policy, not pure technology, now decides where Apple Intelligence can run.
Third-Party AI Models and a Patchwork of Regional Rules
Under the hood, Siri AI iOS 27 includes a new framework that lets Apple route requests to third-party AI models in iOS, such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, turning Siri into a meta-assistant rather than a closed system. This is Apple’s answer to regulatory pressure to open platforms while still mediating access to sensitive device features. In Europe, however, Apple argues the DMA would force it to give “any virtual assistant direct access to users’ private data,” something it frames as incompatible with its Private Cloud Compute and on-device privacy design. Regulators dispute this account and say Apple sought to opt out instead of negotiate. The result is a fractured map: markets where Siri AI can broker multiple AI services inside Apple’s interface, and markets where the same openness requirements block the feature entirely.
AI Subscription Pricing on iPhone: Caps, iCloud+, and Paid Siri
Apple is pairing its Siri AI push with a clear AI subscription pricing direction on iPhone. Cloud-based Apple Intelligence tools, especially image generation, now have daily usage caps; once users hit those limits, features pause until the next reset. iCloud+ subscribers, historically paying for storage and a few privacy extras, are set to receive higher AI limits, turning that plan into an entry-level AI tier. According to TelecomTalk, Apple is also “reportedly considering a paid subscription tier for advanced Siri AI features,” mirroring Google’s Gemini strategy of a free baseline and premium power features. Early on, Apple may bundle richer Siri AI tools into iCloud+ before spinning them into a standalone subscription. Over time, this could split iOS 27 users into free, iCloud+-boosted, and fully paid Siri AI tiers, even when they own identical hardware.
Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7 and the Global AI Assistant Battle
While Apple Intelligence struggles with regulation and pricing questions, Huawei is positioning HarmonyOS 7 as a direct rival to Siri AI iOS 27. The new HarmonyOS 7 beta adds more than 2,000 integrated AI agents that plug into its voice assistant and app ecosystem, designed around multi-step task completion. Huawei’s developer documentation claims a 90 percent success rate on these multi-step workflows and a 30–40 percent improvement over rival platforms’ baselines. That approach turns the OS into an AI agent hub handling everything from personalized marathon training plans to cross-device file routing and coding helpers inside IDEs. With HarmonyOS holding 19 percent of the smartphone OS installed base in China versus 16 percent for iOS, Huawei is betting that tight agent integration, not just a single branded assistant, will win the next wave of AI-first phone users.
Siri AI Device Compatibility: A New Hardware Divide
Siri AI device compatibility introduces another layer of fragmentation: even in regions where Apple Intelligence is allowed, many users will not qualify. The upgrade requires recent chips, so only iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus family, iPhone 16 Pro models, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17, 17e, 17 Pro and Pro Max, and the new iPhone Air will support Siri AI at launch. On tablets, only iPad Pro and iPad Air with M1 or later, plus the A17 Pro iPad mini, qualify. All Apple silicon Macs, from M1 onward (and A18 Pro-based machines), are in, while Apple Watch gains Siri AI only when paired with a supported iPhone. TechRepublic cites Bloomberg Intelligence in noting that “more than half of iPhones do not support Apple Intelligence,” turning Siri AI into both a feature and an upgrade incentive.
