Two Major FPS Playtests Open This Week: Cinder City and Payday Aces High

Two Major FPS Playtests Open This Week: Cinder City and Payday Aces High

Why This Is the Week FPS Fans Should Pay Attention

This week’s FPS playtests matter because they open rare, time-limited windows into two very different shooters, letting players shape a tactical open-world gunfight and a VR co-op heist long before full release through focused, small-scale public tests and early community feedback loops.

If you care about where shooters go next, this is not the week to backlog another campaign; it is the week to get hands-on. NC’s Cinder City playtest offers the first public look at a near-future FPS set in a post-apocalyptic Seoul that blends horror, sci-fi, and traditional gunplay. At the same time, Payday: Aces High is opening its doors to VR thieves on both SteamVR and Meta Quest 3, with playtests starting August 20. The key takeaway is simple: between a tense open-world tactical shooter and a co-op heist in VR, you can sample two very different futures for the genre within days of each other.

Two Major FPS Playtests Open This Week: Cinder City and Payday Aces High

Cinder City: A Tactical FPS Test with Tight Time Windows

Cinder City is the grounded, gun-in-hand option this week: a tactical FPS set in a near-future, post-apocalyptic Seoul that mixes horror, sci-fi, and classic shooting. This Cinder City playtest is pre-alpha, which means you are not getting polish, you are getting raw systems and structure—and that is exactly why it is interesting. It is the first public phase since the game’s reveal and the first real chance to see what NC has been building.

Access comes with firm limits. The Cinder City playtest runs from Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16, with sessions from 5pm–9pm PST on day one, then extended until 11pm on Saturday and Sunday. You must be at least 16 and located in North America to take part. Those constraints mean this pre-alpha is aimed at focused feedback, not mass hype. If you want to influence how a large-scale tactical shooter evolves, these narrow slots are when your opinion will matter most.

Payday: Aces High in VR: Co-op Heists for Headset Owners

Where Cinder City is about surviving a ruined city, Payday: Aces High is about robbing it blind from inside a headset. Fast Travel Games is holding playtests next week for its co-op heist shooter Payday: Aces High on SteamVR and Quest 3, with tests starting August 20. This FPS playtest is VR-only, so it targets a different slice of players: those ready to stand up, strap in, and coordinate four-way robberies in full immersion.

You and up to three friends become The Aces, thieves framed by business titan Warren Jupiter, and you hit banks, museums, and his penthouse in revenge-fueled heists. Squads always run as groups of four, with AI filling empty slots, which should make the playtest accessible even if you cannot assemble a full crew on short notice. The game is scheduled to release later in 2026 and can already be wishlisted for both Steam and Quest 3 headsets. If you want to help stress-test VR gunplay and co-op pacing, this is your stage.

Which FPS Playtest Should You Prioritize?

You do not need to choose between these FPS playtests, but you should be clear on what you want from each. Cinder City is for players craving a tactical shooter beta-style experience: traditional gunplay, a huge, hostile city, and MMO-like boss encounters in a world from a studio that already proved it can build large-scale online spaces. Limited hours, age gates, and North American access requirements mean it is a more traditional, tightly controlled test.

Payday: Aces High is ideal if you own a VR headset and care more about the feel of pulling off a co-op heist than exploring a vast open world. With simultaneous playtests on SteamVR and Meta Quest 3 starting August 20, it is the better option if you want to see how a dedicated VR shooter handles teamwork, AI companions, and replayable robberies. In my view, genre fans should treat this week as a sampler: use Cinder City to judge the next wave of tactical open-world shooters, and use Payday: Aces High to decide whether VR heists deserve a permanent slot in your rotation.

How to Approach Both Tests and Why They Matter Long-Term

Both playtests are early access opportunities in the best sense: quick, focused looks at upcoming FPS titles across wildly different platforms and subgenres. Think of them less as demos and more as a chance to vote with your time and feedback. Cinder City needs players who can tolerate rough edges to stress-test its open-world structure and tactical encounters. Payday: Aces High needs VR fans willing to coordinate and see how four-player heists flow when AI fills the gaps.

If you join, go in with intent. For Cinder City, pay attention to pacing, enemy telegraphs, and how the world funnels you between horror and firefights. For Payday: Aces High, focus on motion comfort, aiming, and how clearly your squad can communicate roles under pressure. The long-term win is clear: the more thoughtful feedback these tests get now, the better the final games will be when they graduate from pre-alpha slices and VR trial runs into the shooters you will play for months.
