State of Play Becomes PlayStation’s Summer Tentpole
PlayStation State of Play is Sony’s recurring digital event series where the company streams new game announcements, gameplay trailers, and release dates, effectively acting as its primary platform for major seasonal gaming news. The June edition opened the broader Summer Game Fest window and ran for more than an hour, filling in a large part of the late 2026 release calendar with dates clustered across September and early October. Sony anchored the stream with headline-grabbing reveals like God of War Laufey and the Until Dawn 2 reveal, then threaded in fresh Marvel Wolverine gameplay and deep dives on returning franchises and new IP. According to FullCleared, the show “opened on a vicious new cut of Marvel’s Wolverine and closed by finally pulling the sheet off God of War Laufey,” framing the broadcast around two of PlayStation’s most recognizable names.
God of War Laufey Redefines the Franchise
God of War Laufey was the clear centerpiece of the event, framed as the next mainline chapter from Santa Monica Studio. Instead of Kratos, players control Faye, the late wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, giving a character long treated as mythic backstory a full game of her own. The extended gameplay slice showed her fighting through a dangerous divine afterlife, thick with magic and hostile gods from multiple pantheons. Techloy notes that the game “seems poised to expand the God of War lore in ways fans have only speculated about,” shifting the focus from fatherhood to Faye’s struggle to protect her family even in death. Deborah Ann Woll returns to voice Faye, and she is joined by an offbeat ally in the form of a talking gelatinous cube voiced by Jack Quaid, hinting at a sharper tonal range amid the series’ familiar weighty drama.
Marvel’s Wolverine Gameplay Shows a Hard-Edged Logan
Marvel Wolverine gameplay opened the State of Play and set a harsh, grounded tone. Insomniac’s latest superhero project draws a clear line between Logan and the studio’s Spider-Man games: the action is closer, more brutal, and more focused on a linear, story-driven structure. The new footage centered on claw-based melee, blood-soaked encounters, and coordinated attacks with members of mutant task force Team X. Jean Grey appears as a telekinetic partner, combining powers with Logan for coordinated takedowns against the cybernetic Reavers. FullCleared confirms that Marvel’s Wolverine is headed for a September 15 launch, planting the game firmly in a crowded Fall window. The emphasis on grounded violence, tighter level design, and a smaller cast suggests a character study of Logan rather than a sprawling open-world adventure, making this one of the most distinctive pieces of Marvel Wolverine gameplay shown so far.
Until Dawn 2 Reveal and a Stacked Horror Lineup
The Until Dawn 2 reveal counted among the biggest surprises of the night. Firesprite’s sequel moves the choice-driven horror formula to a tropical island, where a group of ghost hunters becomes trapped with a mysterious slasher-like killer. The first game earned a cult following for its branching narrative and permanent character deaths, and the sequel aims to revive that formula for a new generation when it arrives in 2027. Horror fans also saw a brief appearance from ILL, adding another gruesome option to PlayStation’s future catalog. Together with God of War Laufey’s mythic afterlife journey and the hard-edged Marvel Wolverine gameplay, Sony’s summer State of Play carried a noticeably darker tone. That mix of cinematic scares and heavy action helped the event feel like a deliberate counterpoint to lighter summer releases, signaling that horror and mature storytelling will be prominent across upcoming PlayStation exclusives.
Fall 2026 Release Wave: Control Resonant, Dune, Ace Combat and More
Beyond its headline franchises, the PlayStation State of Play quietly packed the back half of 2026 with new releases. Control Resonant, Remedy’s paranatural follow-up set in a warped version of Manhattan, is slated for September 24, bringing Dylan’s journey with a shapeshifting weapon and the return of Jesse Faden. Dune Awakening arrives on PlayStation 5 on September 22 in a definitive edition that folds in a new single-player mode and expanded story content. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve takes flight on October 2 with 30 planes and oversized aerial set pieces, while Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered lands on October 1, bundling the base game and its Xtreme Legends expansion. Marathon’s Season 2: NIGHTFALL is live now with an Open Play Week running from June 2 to June 9, and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls expanded its roster with Doctor Doom’s villainous Knights of Doom team.
