The Denza N8’s strategy is brute-force electrification: fit so much usable energy on board that range anxiety becomes irrelevant. That alone vaults it into the elite club of extreme range electric vehicles, with official CLTC driving ranges topping out at 623 miles on a full charge. Even after discounting optimistic test cycles, this is firmly 1000 km EV range territory in the real world.

This battery isn’t paired to a meek drivetrain either. In its wildest form, the N8 uses a triple-motor all-wheel-drive setup: a 270 kW front motor and two 310 kW rear motors, delivering a combined 890 kW or 1,193 hp. It is a luxury three-row SUV that accelerates like a supercar yet aims to remove the classic EV compromise of “fast but short-legged”. An additional 105.792 kWh pack offers more modest yet still long-distance capability, with ranges of 497, 522, and 603 miles depending on powertrain.

Nissan Qashqai e-Power: Hybrid Efficiency as a Range Weapon

If the Denza N8 wins through sheer battery mass, Nissan’s Qashqai e-Power takes a different route: it uses a petrol engine strictly as a generator, keeping the wheels driven purely by an electric motor. The car refuels with petrol and never plugs in, yet its operating logic is fundamentally electric. That nuance matters because the recent long distance EV records are framed around electricity-driven travel, not traditional mechanical drivetrains.

In a Guinness-monitored run, a Qashqai e-Power covered 1,980 km from Bogotá to Colombia’s Caribbean coast on a single tank, without external charging or refuelling. Judges independently monitored every stage before granting certification. It’s a strong proof point for the efficiency of series hybrids: manage engine load carefully, size the generator and motor smartly, and you can stretch a tank far beyond what most drivers assume. Yet key data is missing: Nissan has not disclosed the test car’s fuel-tank volume or an official consumption figure, so that 1,980 km should not be read as an everyday economy promise.

Under the skin, the Denza N8 and Qashqai e-Power follow radically different philosophies to reach extreme range. Denza leans on a huge LFP pack, betting that continued refinement of this chemistry can turn what many once saw as a heavy, budget choice into high-end battery hardware. Nissan doubles down on hybrid efficiency, using a 5‑in‑1 module that integrates motor, generator, inverter, reducer and increaser so the engine focuses on generating electricity while the electric motor alone drives the wheels. Aerodynamic optimisation and careful power management sit on top of these choices, refining how far each kilowatt-hour or litre can take you.

Still, there are shared weaknesses. The Colombian record adds an independently verified long-distance result, but several buyer-facing details remain unanswered. We do not know the exact fuel tank size, nor how easily regular drivers can match that feat. On the Denza side, CLTC figures of 497, 522, 603 and 623 miles are impressive, but real-world conditions will trim those numbers. Even with high energy density, a massive 130.15 kWh pack adds weight and cost, and we lack independent, on-road validation of its full claimed range.

Why These Records Reset Buyer Expectations

The most important shift isn’t the raw numbers; it’s the narrative they kill. For years, the prevailing wisdom held that big SUVs needed a petrol generator as a crutch for true long-distance touring. Now, 130 kWh of LFP chemistry in a full-size hauler that casually cruises past the 620 miles barrier puts pressure on established luxury rivals and “renders the hybrid crutch obsolete” in Denza’s segment. At the same time, Nissan’s record proves that even without plugging in, an electricity-driven drivetrain can cross a continent on a single tank when carefully engineered and driven.

Together, these extreme range electric vehicles redraw the mental map for buyers. A 1000 km EV range is no longer a speculative promise dreamt up by marketers; it’s a verified reality that buyers can point to in both premium and more mainstream segments. The open questions around tank capacity, real-world consumption and independent highway testing should make shoppers sceptical of headline figures. Yet the direction of travel is unmistakable: long-distance EV capability and real-world feasibility have stepped into a new era, and future models that fail to approach four-figure ranges will look dated faster than their makers expect.
