Meta’s licensing of ROC facial recognition technology for internal smart glasses development is an experimental project that combines face matching and liveness detection in a consumer-style wearable, raising new smart glasses privacy concerns and questions about AR glasses surveillance in everyday life. WIRED reported that the connection surfaced inside facial recognition code embedded in Meta’s AI companion app for its glasses, where the ROC module was present but inactive and later removed. Neither Meta nor ROC has explained the scope or duration of the deal. ROC facial recognition technology did not emerge from the usual consumer app ecosystem. The ROC–Meta link highlights a structural shift in identity technology. Facial recognition, once tied to desktops and fixed checkpoints, is moving into mobile devices and wearables that operate at the point of encounter.
