L’Oréal and OpenAI’s partnership is an AI beauty technology alliance that connects advanced language models, computer vision and life sciences reasoning to change how shoppers discover products, how scientists study skin, and how marketers create beauty content at scale across brands and channels. Announced at VivaTech 2026, the collaboration is framed by L’Oréal as a “defining moment in beauty's transformation in the age of AI”, signalling that generative tools are moving from pilots to the core of the group’s strategy. The deal is built around AI-powered consumer journeys and AI-powered métiers, covering research, science and marketing. With more than 900 million weekly users on ChatGPT, the reach of OpenAI’s platforms gives L’Oréal a powerful gateway for AI-powered shopping experiences, while OpenAI gains a deep, data-rich beauty partner to test AI-native commerce, skincare guidance and beauty content creation AI in a complex, fast-moving category.
From Chat to Counter: AI-Powered Shopping Experiences
The first pillar of the alliance focuses on AI-powered consumer journeys and what the partners describe as agentic commerce, turning conversations into shopping actions. Maybelline New York will plug its Makeup Virtual Try-On tool directly into ChatGPT, using L’Oréal’s ModiFace technology so users can discover and test looks inside an AI dialogue in real time. L’Oréal will also strengthen product discovery for brands such as Lancôme and Kérastase within ChatGPT in the US by feeding enhanced signals that help the assistant surface relevant items. According to L’Oréal, SkinCeuticals, CeraVe and Garnier are already part of a global ChatGPT ad pilot that tests AI-native advertising at the moment of consumer intent and commerce. Together, these moves show how AI beauty technology is shifting from static recommendation widgets to conversational, image-aware and transaction-ready experiences that blur the line between advice, trial and checkout.
OpenAI Skincare Research: Mapping the Microbiome
Beyond retail, the partnership pushes into OpenAI skincare research through GPT-Rosalind, a purpose-built life sciences reasoning model. L’Oréal is using this tool to map the skin microbiome, which is home to millions of beneficial microbes, at a scale and depth that would be hard to reach with conventional methods. By analysing complex biological datasets, GPT-Rosalind helps L’Oréal identify beneficial bacteria that could support the next generation of natural, effective skincare, starting with La Roche-Posay. This aligns with L’Oréal’s long-standing scientific positioning and gives OpenAI a concrete, specialised use case for domain-specific reasoning. The work suggests that future skincare will rely on AI not only to recommend products, but to shape how formulas are designed, tested and adapted, tightening the loop between laboratory insights, clinical performance and personalised guidance delivered through AI-powered shopping experiences.
Automating Beauty Content Creation With GenAI
Marketing is the second major front, where OpenAI’s latest model will drive CreAItech, L’Oréal’s internal generative platform for beauty content creation AI. The collaboration also fits into L’Oréal’s broader Transformative AI roadmap, which aims to spread AI fluency across the organisation and secure a lead over other beauty groups experimenting with personalization and AI commerce. The company says 73,000 employees have already been trained in generative AI and use internal tools such as L’OréalGPT and personal AI companions, turning AI into a daily work aid rather than a specialised function.
