The pantry kept the same footprint, but opening the door now turns on lights beneath every shelf, reaching the deep areas where food had been difficult to find.
COB LED strips sit inside aluminum diffuser channels beneath each shelf, sending light across the level below instead of relying on the ceiling fixture to reach past every shelf. With the lights switched on, each shelf illuminates the one below it, including the back section where smaller pantry items had been difficult to see. The LED system connects to a momentary switch in the doorjamb, so opening the pantry door activates the lights and closing it switches them off.
This is deep pantry lighting done properly. You stop losing food, you stop overbuying, and your storage finally works as a clear, functional extension of your kitchen instead of a hidden mess.

Lighting as Interior Styling, Not Visual Noise
Good lighting does more than reveal labels; it shapes how organized your home feels. In that rebuilt pantry, white Formica covered both sides of the MDF shelves, replacing dark wood with surfaces that reflect more of the installed light. Stained reclaimed oak covers the front edge of each white shelf, concealing the layered construction while matching the oak supports.

Light bounces off the white surfaces, the oak fronts add warmth, and the LEDs stay hidden behind clean lines. You gain a bright, gallery-like view of dry goods instead of a cluttered closet vibe.
In the laundry nook example, the floor itself joins the design story: a black-and-white penny tile field finishes the nook, with “WASH & DRY” spelled across the entrance, and the finished tile turns the floor into part of the laundry-room design. When storage and light are designed together, even utilitarian corners feel finished rather than improvised.

Solving Sloped Ceilings and Awkward Nooks with Built-Ins
Awkward spaces expose the limits of standard cabinets. Laundry nooks under sloped ceilings can have plenty of wall space without offering many good places for storage; a standard cabinet cannot fit beneath the lowest section, so homeowners end up with a single wire shelf that holds supplies in view without using the full wall.
One remodel tossed the wire rack and rethought the wall around the ceiling line. The uneven wall gained two forms of storage: a closed cabinet beneath the taller section and a wood shelf extending into the lower slope. Finished nook design divides storage according to ceiling height: closed cabinetry on the tall right side, an open wood shelf reaching left beneath the descending ceiling. Items that can stay visible live on the shelf, while the cabinet provides concealed storage above the dryer.
Even the lowest section beneath the slope now contributes storage instead of ending the shelf run. Add integrated lighting to these areas and you get a compact, efficient, built-in storage design that respects the architecture instead of fighting it.

Minimalist, Smart Shelving Without Sacrificing Capacity

In the rebuilt pantry, oak cleats were attached across the back and side walls at each planned shelf height, letting shelves sit over this framework without visible brackets. Smart controls keep that minimalism honest. The doorjamb switch means the user never has to remember an extra control; opening the door activates the lights and closing it turns them off, addressing the deep-shadow problem without adding another switch to remember.
In both the pantry and the sloped laundry nook, the footprint barely changes, yet storage performance jumps. The washer and dryer remain in the same recess, the sloped ceiling still defines the space, but wire shelving becomes a cabinet-and-shelf combination and bare walls gain structured paneling and a custom tiled floor.
