Check If You Have Access and Join the Beta
Before you start adding animated GIF chat backgrounds, you need access to the newer Google Messages wallpapers feature. It is rolling out through the Google Messages beta, with Droid Life noting that custom chat wallpapers and colors “appear to be ready for mass rollout” in the latest test version. First, make sure you are using Google Messages as your default SMS/RCS app and update it through the Play Store to the newest version available. If you do not see Chat Themes in any thread menu, consider enrolling in the Google Messages beta from the app’s Play Store listing, then update again and relaunch. Keep in mind that this is still a staged rollout; even beta users may have to wait for Google to flip the switch on their account, so check back in your chats periodically.
Open Chat Themes and Set a Custom Wallpaper
Once the feature is active on your phone, you can start Google Messages customization on a per-thread basis. Open Google Messages, choose a specific conversation, and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. From the drop-down list, select Chat Themes. You will see theme color presets at the top, but to add a wallpaper, look for the Choose a photo option described by Droid Life. Tap this to open a wallpaper picker tied to your device’s gallery and recent images. Here you can select static backgrounds, photos, or compatible animated GIFs. The wallpaper you pick applies only to the current chat, so you can give close contacts, family, or work threads their own distinct look while leaving other conversations untouched. If you change your mind, revisit Chat Themes to replace or remove the background.
Use Animated GIFs Without Making Chats Hard to Read
Animated GIF chat backgrounds can add personality, but busy loops can distract or make text harder to read. Android Authority notes that “a poorly chosen GIF” might turn into “an impossibly distracting chat background,” so focus on subtle motions and soft colors. Pick GIFs with large, simple shapes or slow animations rather than rapid edits or flashing effects. After applying a GIF, scroll through the conversation to check message bubbles, timestamps, and icons against the new background. If text blends into darker areas in light mode, switch Google Messages to dark mode, where Android Authority’s early look shows wallpapers working more cleanly with interface elements. You can always return to Chat Themes to test a few different GIFs until you find a balance between a lively look and comfortable readability during long conversations.
