Adobe’s AI Strategy: Automate the Boring, Preserve the Craft
Adobe’s latest Creative Cloud updates expand AI across Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and more, aiming to automate repetitive production work while preserving user control over every creative decision. Rather than building fully autonomous editors, Adobe is wiring AI into existing workflows so that tasks like culling, rotoscoping, masking, and captioning become faster but remain user-directed. The company is rolling out Assisted Culling in Lightroom, smarter masking in Premiere Pro, and new object-matte tools in After Effects, alongside smaller Photoshop and Illustrator tweaks. Across the board, the tools are opt-in assistants: they propose, group, sharpen, or isolate, but users still select, refine, and approve. This balance between Lightroom and Photoshop AI automation and manual override positions Adobe against more automated rivals, signaling to professionals that AI will support, not replace, their judgment.

Lightroom: Assisted Culling and Sharpening With Clear User Overrides
Lightroom is where Adobe AI features in Creative Cloud feel most like a practical assistant. Assisted Culling now analyses each face, checks eye sharpness, and detects whether eyes are open, then stacks similar frames and recommends the strongest image for selection. According to PetaPixel, Assisted Culling was “developed in close collaboration with its users,” and now includes customizable filters so photographers can dial how aggressive the system should be or overrule its picks completely. New Photo to Video converts stills into polished b-roll or reels using Firefly and Google Veo, with text prompts giving users creative direction over AI-generated motion. AI Sharpen now taps Topaz Labs’ Noise-Aware Sharpen model inside Lightroom, recovering fine details such as fur and foliage without a separate plugin. Support for all Sony Alpha 7R VI RAW formats rounds out a release focused on speed without sacrificing judgment.
Photoshop: Precision Layers and Subtle AI Assistance
In Photoshop, the update list is shorter but aligned with the same AI user control creative editing philosophy. The upgraded Reflection Removal feature no longer bakes changes destructively into the base layer. Instead, reflections are isolated on a separate layer, so editors can adjust opacity, mask back areas, or blend the effect for a natural look. That seemingly small shift matters: AI does the heavy lifting of isolating and cleaning tricky window glare, but the final aesthetic is still governed by brushwork, opacity sliders, and blend modes. This emphasis on layered control helps reassure photographers wary of one-click transformations that cannot be fine-tuned. Together with Lightroom’s tools, Photoshop’s refinements show Adobe moving away from monolithic AI filters and toward modular, editable effects that slot cleanly into existing retouching workflows.

Premiere Pro and After Effects: Smarter Automation, Editor in the Driver’s Seat
Premiere Pro and After Effects receive AI that speeds timelines without taking over the cut. In Premiere Pro, AI-enhanced Object Mask is faster and more natural, and it can regenerate masks if media goes offline, but editors still define what to isolate and how to grade or composite it. New tools like Global Audio Mute, Marker Search, 3D Spinback and Slide transitions, plus Channel Blur, Gradient, and Noise FX streamline editing while remaining manual choices in the timeline. Single Word Captioning gives granular control over captions at the word level, rather than locking text into blocks. After Effects adds Object Matte for AI-powered rotoscoping and object selection, making tedious isolation work quicker while leaving keyframing and compositing decisions to the artist. Expanded 3D features and SVG-to-shape imports further support motion designers who want speed without giving up precision.

A Differentiated AI Approach: Assistance, Not Autopilot
Taken together, the Premiere Pro and After Effects AI updates, Lightroom Photoshop AI automation, and smaller Illustrator changes show a consistent design choice: AI proposes, users dispose. Adobe’s tools focus on time-consuming, low-level work—image culling, sharpening, reflection removal, caption tweaks, masks, and mattes—while exposing settings, layers, and filters so humans can override or refine results. This distinguishes Adobe from fully autonomous editing tools that try to output final cuts or finished images from minimal input.
