Instead of chasing headline power figures, Audi says the A2 can travel 4.85 miles for every kWh stored in its battery, a figure that plants it firmly among the most efficient electric city cars on sale. For buyers who care more about how far they can drive than how fast they can sprint, this is the first Audi that feels built specifically for them.

The defining story of the new A2 e-tron is its obsession with cutting drag rather than inflating power. Audi’s so-called efficiency package adds air curtains at the front, an active cool-air intake and “gap-reducers” in the wheel trims that narrow the space between tyre and wheel arch to calm airflow. The result is that 0.24 drag coefficient, the best in Audi’s compact line-up, and a claimed reduction in official consumption by as much as 0.9kWh/100km.

In preliminary WLTP tests, the 140kW A2 e-tron with a 61kWh battery and the efficiency package achieved 12.8kWh/100km, pointing to around 470km of range on a charge. Audi is pairing its aero work with aggressive attempts to trim electrical and mechanical losses. The APP350 electric motor used in the A2 e-tron has been tuned for efficiency and driving comfort, and is claimed to be up to 10 percent more efficient than comparable motors in the brand’s existing EVs. Thinner 0.2mm laminations reduce iron losses, while a tall 10.2:1 gear ratio drops motor speed to cut consumption. Silicon carbide semiconductors in the power electronics reduce switching losses by up to 20 watts, and alternative modulation techniques slice switching losses by up to 33 percent.

All of this is Audi doing what the original A2 did: chasing grams and watts instead of only chasing prestige. The company explicitly says these measures “aim to bring the principles of the pioneering original Audi A2 into the modern era,” and that intent shows. The new car may use the latest rear-drive variant of the MEB+ architecture, but philosophically it is the same A2 that once made efficiency fashionable, now updated for electrons instead of fuel.

Battery Choices that Favor Real-World City Use

Where many premium compact electric vehicles chase ever larger battery capacities, Audi’s A2 e-tron takes a more pragmatic path. It uses a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack in a cell-to-pack design, which increases packing density by bonding cells directly to the housing and removes the need for rare earth elements. LFP chemistry is naturally better suited to frequent, high state-of-charge use; Audi says this battery is more resilient to regular charging to 100 percent, can be routinely fully charged in daily use, and hits nearly 90 percent charging efficiency at a home wallbox.

That last figure is critical. An 89.6 percent charging efficiency via an adapted cooling strategy means less energy lost as heat and more of what you pay for ending up in the battery. For urban drivers plugging in at night, the A2’s efficiency-first battery strategy directly cuts running costs while easing concerns about long-term degradation. In a world where many EVs still nudge owners away from frequent 100 percent charges, the A2 feels built for the reality of small-apartment life and public chargers rather than laboratory ideals.

What This Means for Compact EV Buyers

The A2 e-tron is more than a nostalgic reboot; it signals a shift in what premium compact EVs are supposed to be. Audi openly sees an opportunity in the growing compact EV market and is evaluating the A2 e-tron for additional regions because “there is a lot of growth in that segment.” This car is designed to enter the small SUV and compact hatch space and take on relatives like the ID.3 Neo, not with brute-force performance but with efficiency as its calling card.

The covers will come off later this year with a possible public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, and Audi is already talking about five-figure annual sales. That ambition matters. If the most efficient Audi ever lands in volume, it will pressure rivals to treat efficiency as a headline spec, not a footnote. For buyers prioritizing range and running costs in efficient electric city cars, the A2 e-tron says the quiet part aloud: in dense, compact urban life, smart aerodynamics and loss-free drive tech are worth more than another 50kW of power.
