Apple is preparing the most significant Siri redesign since the assistant launched, recasting it as an always-on AI agent rather than a simple voice command tool. In iOS 27, Siri will support back-and-forth text conversations in a layout that resembles a messaging thread, echoing the ChatGPT-style interfaces users are now familiar with. Instead of one-shot questions, you’ll be able to refine queries, follow up and keep context within a single chat. This conversational Siri can tap into personal data and take actions across apps, making it more of an active iPhone AI assistant than a passive responder. A new “Search or Ask” field sits at the top of the interface, letting users treat Siri as just one option alongside system search, while leaving room for third-party AI services. Dynamic Island Siri and an Always-Visible AI Layer
The Dynamic Island is set to become Siri’s new home, turning Apple’s pill-shaped status area into a persistent AI surface. When you invoke Siri via the wake word or power button, a large animation expands from the Dynamic Island at the top of the display. From there, swiping down reveals a “Search or Ask” bar embedded in the Island, complete with a microphone button for voice input. Users can quickly jump between the rebuilt Siri and third-party AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini from the same control. Swiping further down transitions into the full chatbot view, with inline mini app cards for weather, calendar entries, notes and more. This Dynamic Island Siri design keeps assistant responses visible without hijacking the whole screen, shifting Siri from a transient overlay into an always-available layer of the iPhone interface.
AI-Powered Search and the New Standalone Siri App
Beyond the main interface, iOS 27 features deeper AI-powered search and a standalone Siri app designed for longer-term use. System-wide search gains an “open web” mode that can generate detailed answers, bulleted summaries and rich image results for broad knowledge questions. Instead of dumping users into a browser, Siri can synthesize information in place, similar to modern AI chat services. The new Siri app organizes past conversations into tall rounded cards, each representing a previous session. A dedicated search bar lets you dig through older queries, while an “Ask Siri” field at the bottom supports text input, voice, document uploads and images. This turns Siri into a persistent history of your interactions, not just a transient helper. Together, AI search and the standalone app position Siri as a central hub for both on-device tasks and broader information retrieval.
Customizable Camera Controls and Visual Intelligence in the Viewfinder
iOS 27 also brings one of the biggest Camera app overhauls in years, aimed at users who treat the iPhone as more than a casual shooter. The default layout remains familiar, but you can now swap in a customizable tray of advanced controls that slides up from the bottom of the screen. Exposure, depth-of-field and resolution toggles can be organized into per-mode “widgets” pinned at the top of the interface, letting you design a capture setup tailored to your habits. Apple is also relocating the master controls button closer to the shutter for quicker access. A new Siri mode inside the Camera app ties into Apple’s Visual Intelligence features, enabling real-time identification of objects, on-the-fly translation of signs and contextual answers based on what the viewfinder sees. This converges imaging and AI, making the camera a live entry point into the broader iPhone AI assistant.
System-Wide Design Overhauls and What to Expect at WWDC
Siri and Camera are the headline changes, but iOS 27 is shaping up as a broader design refresh across Apple’s core apps. Reports point to updates to Safari, including a new start page with faster access to key sections, as well as visual tweaks to Weather and other system utilities under Apple’s evolving Liquid Glass design language. Image Playground and search are also expected to benefit from the same AI foundations underpinning the Siri redesign. Collectively, these shifts aim to make the iPhone feel more context-aware, conversational and visually coherent, with Dynamic Island Siri as the visible tip of a larger AI strategy. Apple is set to detail iOS 27 at its WWDC developer conference, running online from June 8 to 12, with a special in-person event on June 8 where the company is expected to showcase the full suite of iOS 27 features.
