That inner satisfaction differs from the quick dopamine hit of scrolling or tapping through pre-made games; it is tied to identity and competence. When a child finds something enjoyable on their own—building a sandcastle, inventing a role-play, mastering a new physical trick—they are rehearsing resilience: “I can feel stuck, experiment, and change my state.” Over time, this practice builds independence more effectively than any schedule engineered to keep them constantly busy yet never responsible for their own happiness.

How to Respond to Boredom: Offer Space, Not Solutions
Most parents instinctively try to fix boredom with entertainment: a new app, another activity, a rush to become the permanent playmate.
