They reduce waiting, expand which machines can contribute to renders, and give artists more control over emerging data formats like Gaussian splats. If you care about getting more versions out the door per day, these releases matter.
OctaneRender 2026.4: neural radiance cache grows up
OctaneRender 2026.4 is less about new buzzwords and more about making its headline features usable in real production. The neural radiance cache (NRC) uses a neural network trained at render time to reduce noise on first pixel, particularly in scenes with indirect lighting. In 2026.1, NRC was restricted to Windows and Linux, and only for local renders; the new release expands support to macOS and to network rendering, turning it from a clever demo into a pipeline feature.
For studios, NRC is a strategic change: it cuts noise early, which means fewer samples and faster preview passes when refining lighting and shaders. OctaneRender 2026.4 also extends its 3D Gaussian Splatting toolset to support SPZ 4, the latest open-source format for 3DGS data. On the hardware side, OctaneRender remains a CUDA-focused GPU production renderer compatible with Windows 10+ and Linux, requiring a CUDA 10-capable NVIDIA GPU, while Octane X covers macOS and iPadOS with Apple silicon support. The mix is clear: NRC plus modern format support equals faster, more flexible rendering, provided you are already in the NVIDIA or Apple ecosystems.

V-Ray 7.4 for Maya: AMD GPUs and Bifrost support open new doors
V-Ray 7.4 for Maya focuses on closing long-standing gaps rather than chasing novelty. According to the release notes, Update 4 landed last week, bringing a performance boost of up to 13% on Windows and up to 6% on Linux. More important than those percentages is what hardware the renderer now uses: it is the first release since V-Ray 3 to support AMD processors in V-Ray GPU, the hybrid GPU/CPU engine, using the HIP framework. That finally gives artists with AMD cards a practical way to contribute GPU rendering power, instead of being sidelined.
The V-Ray Maya renderer also tightens its integration with the host DCC. V-Ray 7.4 improves support for Bifrost, Maya’s node-based simulation framework, including Bifrost 3, meshes and strands, instances, animations, and assigning materials through the Bifrost graph. For teams building complex effects, being able to stay inside Bifrost instead of exporting workarounds is a real productivity win. The update adds support for USD for Maya 0.35 and 0.36, aligning V-Ray with the USD plugin versions used in Maya 2027. In other words, this is an infrastructure release: it slots the renderer into modern Maya workflows and finally makes AMD GPUs first-class citizens.

3D Gaussian Splatting and parallax interiors: new tools, less geometry

V-Ray 7.4 adds native parallax interiors through VRayParallaxTex, giving realistic interior depth to buildings without modeling actual internal geometry. That change may look minor, but it is a quiet revolution for archviz and set dressing: fewer polygons, less setup, and more believable results. Combined with updates like quick caustics in VRayMtl and new controls in V-RayToon, plus Scatter improvements and shader support on macOS Metal, the pattern is clear. Both vendors are helping artists build rich spaces with smarter representations, not just faster brute force.
