What Raptor Lake Next Is and Why DDR4 Still Matters
Intel’s Raptor Lake Next platform refers to a new wave of Core 200-series desktop processors built on the existing LGA-1700 socket that focus on affordable DDR4 memory support instead of pricier DDR5, giving cost-conscious PC builders a longer upgrade path on older motherboards. Intel is planning to launch these Raptor Lake Next CPUs in the first half of 2027 as a third refresh of its Raptor Lake design, which already appeared as 13th and 14th Gen chips. Rather than introducing a new architecture, the chips stay on the mature Intel 7 process with familiar Raptor Cove and Gracemont cores. The key change is strategic: DDR4 compatibility becomes the headline feature, aimed at builders who want better CPU performance without paying current DDR5 premiums or replacing their entire platform.

DDR4 Support on LGA-1700 Extends Cheap Upgrade Paths
For anyone on an Alder Lake or Raptor Lake system, Raptor Lake Next means your LGA-1700 motherboard and DDR4 kit remain relevant for at least one more upgrade cycle. Intel is, in effect, squeezing a third generation out of LGA-1700 so users can drop in a new Core 200 CPU without swapping memory or board. According to Tom’s Hardware, Intel plans to launch Raptor Lake Next in the first half of 2027, keeping these chips on shelves alongside the newer Nova Lake platform. This mirrors AMD’s decision to keep its DDR4-based AM4 ecosystem alive with a revived Ryzen 7 5800X3D. For budget PC building in 2027, that means a sizable pool of used and new LGA-1700 motherboards, cheaper DDR4 kits, and fresh CPUs all co-existing.

High DDR5 Prices Push Intel Back Toward DDR4
The entire strategy exists because DDR5 prices remain high and are not expected to drop soon. One report notes that consumer DDR5 memory kit pricing is more than four times higher than it was a year ago, and ongoing demand from AI data centers keeps squeezing DRAM supply. Intel’s current Arrow Lake desktop platform moved fully to DDR5, which raised the total cost for new mid-range builds. Raptor Lake Next walks that back by reviving DDR4 support so builders can sidestep expensive DDR5 kits. At Computex, Tom’s Hardware confirmed that at least two motherboard makers are now ramping production of DDR4 boards for both LGA-1700 and AMD’s AM4, suggesting that industry partners also see DDR4 as the realistic choice for lower-cost gaming and productivity systems.
A Third Raptor Lake Refresh Aimed at the Low-End Market
Raptor Lake Next marks the third refresh of Intel’s Raptor Lake family, but the focus has shifted from headline performance to value. Intel positions these Core 200 CPUs as more affordable counterparts to the upcoming Nova Lake lineup, which will sit on a different socket and pursue AI-focused features. Early leaks describe three main Raptor Lake Next models: a 16-core chip with 8 performance and 8 efficient cores, a 20-core variant with 8P+12E at around 65W, and a 10-core 6P+4E option. Instead of Core Ultra branding, Intel is expected to use a Core Series 3 style name to separate them from Nova Lake. For budget PC building in 2027, that means a familiar architecture, decent core counts, and DDR4 support, all tuned for lower total platform costs rather than bleeding-edge features.
