How Smartphone RAM Became the Most Expensive Part Inside Your Phone
Smartphone RAM costs refer to the share of a phone’s hardware budget swallowed by memory chips, which has surged as AI data centers compete with consumer devices for the same limited supply. According to Nothing CEO Carl Pei, memory is now the single most expensive component in many phones, often exceeding the combined cost of the processor and display. RAM and storage can account for more than 50% of a smartphone’s hardware bill, reversing years of falling component prices that once kept upgrades affordable. For Nothing’s Phone (4a), Pei says memory costs doubled during development and then doubled again after launch—a 4x spike that left little room to absorb increases elsewhere. This shift means the old assumption that silicon gets cheaper every year no longer holds, and phone makers are being forced to rebuild their pricing strategies around memory first.

AI Memory Demand and a Global Memory Chip Shortage
The current memory chip shortage is tightly linked to AI memory demand, especially from data centers. The same factories that produce DRAM for smartphones also supply high-margin AI servers, and those servers are now first in line. As AI models grow and services process everything from text to vacation photos, data center buyers are soaking up supply and driving up prices. DDR5 memory, a key part of AI infrastructure, has seen prices triple or even quadruple in months, creating knock-on effects for mobile components. Smartphone makers no longer order unlimited RAM at predictable prices; they work within supply quotas and must accept whatever the market rate is. With AI projects continuing to expand, analysts and executives expect tight supply—and elevated smartphone RAM costs—to persist well into 2027, keeping pressure on every new phone launch.
From Component Costs to Phone Price Increases
As RAM becomes the costliest part of a phone, the result is a clear phone price increase across new models. Several devices released since February have arrived around USD 100 (approx. RM460) higher than the phones they replace, even when other specs look similar on paper. Pei warns that when memory alone consumes over half of the hardware budget, brands cannot slash retail prices without selling at a loss. One quotable warning captures the shift: “Memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone. It's more expensive than the processor, more expensive than the display, and can account for more than 50% of the total hardware bill.” With RAM and storage taking such a large slice, any further spike in memory chip prices flows straight into what you pay at checkout.
Why Upcoming Phones May Offer Less for More Money
The memory chip shortage is not only raising prices; it is also warping smartphone specs. As RAM grows expensive, some manufacturers are trimming configurations to hit target price bands. Analysts expect budget models that might have stepped up in memory to stall or even roll back to 4GB RAM, a level that already felt dated several years ago. On the high end, plans for ultra-high smartphone RAM costs—such as 24GB in some AI-focused flagships—are being scaled down to 16GB or similar. You can end up paying more while seeing only modest, or even reduced, memory on the spec sheet. This trade-off undercuts the usual value of waiting for the “next generation,” because the extra money often covers supply pressure rather than meaningful performance gains.
A Tough Buying Window Through 2027
For consumers, this adds up to a difficult buying window with little relief in sight. Pei’s advice is blunt: “The best time was yesterday. The next best time is now.” In other words, waiting for big seasonal promotions may not pay off. With RAM and storage costs elevated, manufacturers have less room to offer steep discounts during holiday sales, and those eyeing AI-ready models face the steepest increases. The memory chip shortage driven by AI memory demand is expected to last into 2027, so there is no clear point when prices will fall back to older levels. If your current phone is failing, delaying a purchase may only mean paying more later; if it still works well, you may decide to hold on as long as possible and skip at least one upgrade cycle.
