What Claude Tag Is: From Bot Command to AI Workspace Agent

Claude Tag is a persistent AI assistant for Slack that operates as a shared team member with its own identity, continuously following channel conversations, remembering context, and taking action without needing repeated instructions from users. Unlike traditional Slack bots that respond to one-off commands and forget the thread, Claude Tag is a Slack-based AI workspace agent that lives inside selected channels as @claude. Teams on Anthropic’s Enterprise and Team plans can add it to channels where it reads messages, maintains context, and posts its own updates under an agent identity instead of borrowing a human account. According to Anthropic’s launch notes, Claude Tag replaces the older Claude in Slack app for these plans, marking a shift from single-user chat helper to shared operational teammate. This design positions Claude Tag as part memory layer, part workflow engine, inside Slack’s everyday conversations.

Persistent Channel Memory: The AI Coworker Who Never Needs a Re‑Brief

Claude Tag’s defining feature is channel-level memory: it keeps track of decisions, links, and open questions across the full Slack history it can see. When someone mentions @claude for a sprint summary or a status report across several threads, the agent does not need a long recap. It has already followed the discussions, including the thread that went silent or the dependency raised days earlier. This persistent memory lets Claude Tag act more like a colleague who has read every message than a chatbot that starts cold each time. Over hours or days, it can continue work in the same thread, schedule follow-ups, and prepare briefings that blend past context with new updates. For teams, this turns Slack into a living knowledge base, where the Claude Tag Slack agent becomes the connective tissue between scattered conversations and structured output.

From Communication Feed to Operational Brain: Surfacing Bottlenecks

By living inside channels as an always-on participant, Claude Tag helps convert Slack from a noisy message stream into an operational brain. The agent can break complex requests into steps, call connected tools and data via protocols like the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and post progress back into the same thread. Beyond reacting to mentions, it can monitor channels in an ambient mode, flag unresolved threads, and surface stalled tasks that might otherwise sink into the backlog. With access to the right systems, Claude Tag can pull metrics, compile call briefings, triage queues such as support tickets, and even open draft pull requests from bug reports. In Anthropic’s own internal use, the company reports that 65% of its product team’s code is created by its Claude Tag-style agent, underlining how far this Slack enterprise automation approach can extend into real production work.

Governance, Identity, and the Shift to AI Teammates

Claude Tag runs under an agent identity model, which means it uses its own service accounts with channel-scoped permissions and separate memory between private workspaces. Administrators decide which channels it can join, which repositories and tools it can access, and how spending is managed, with channel work billed to the organization and direct messages billed to individual Claude accounts. The beta launch on Anthropic’s Team and Enterprise plans includes organization credits of USD 25,000 (approx. RM115000) for Enterprise customers and USD 2,500 (approx. RM11500) for eligible Team customers, expiring on September 1, 2026. At the same time, a persistent AI agent that reads and remembers Slack history raises questions about data retention, privacy, and policy. Governance now becomes part of deployment: security teams must define what Claude Tag is allowed to remember, where it can act, and how its presence as a de facto coworker is communicated to staff.
