This memory pool is not theoretical bragging rights. The current M3 Ultra with 512GB of unified memory can already run DeepSeek’s R1 model with 671 billion parameters, and estimates suggest M7 Ultra could feasibly handle around 1.2 trillion parameters at 8‑bit quantization. For ordinary users, the impact is clear: workloads that used to require rented GPU servers become plausible on a single desktop, at least for those willing to pay for maxed-out configurations and work around ongoing DRAM shortages.
