When a legitimate call is placed, the caller’s Phone by Google app sends an invisible, end-to-end encrypted confirmation signal to the recipient’s Phone app to prove the call is genuine. If a criminal spoofs the number using internet-based tools, that confirmation is missing. Android then sends a second quick ping to the real device tied to that contact. If that device reports that it is not placing a call, the Phone app flags the incoming call as suspicious and shows a clear warning that someone may be pretending to call from the contact’s number, along with a prominent option to end the call on the spot.
Protecting Against AI Voice Scams Without Listening In
Fake call detection focuses on device identity instead of analysing voices, which makes it effective against AI voice scams without invading privacy. Scammers increasingly combine caller ID spoofing with AI voice cloning to imitate a parent, boss, or bank representative and demand urgent payments, passwords, or one-time codes. Interpol-linked figures cited in Google’s briefing connect impersonation fraud to more than USD 400 billion (approx. RM1.84 trillion) in global losses, while impersonation scams reported to the FTC in the United States alone caused USD 2.95 billion (approx. RM13.6 billion) in losses in 2024. Because the system checks whether the contact’s device is truly calling, it can expose these tricks even when the voice sounds convincing. Users see a warning before they answer, which helps them pause, hang up, and verify the situation through another trusted channel.
Which Android Phones Get Fake Call Detection and How to Enable It
Fake call detection is part of Google’s June Android feature rollout and is compatible with most modern Android phones running Android 12 or later through the Phone by Google app. The feature debuts first on Google Pixel devices, with a broader rollout planned for other smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 series. The protection only works when both the caller and the recipient are using the Phone by Google app, because that app handles the RCS-based verification and encrypted handshakes. It is enabled by default on supported devices, but users can turn it off in the Phone app’s settings if they choose. Anyone whose phone uses a different default dialer can download the official Phone by Google app from Google Play and set it as the default caller to activate fake call detection and gain AI voice scam protection.
