Adobe announced on June 25 that it entered a definitive agreement to acquire Topaz Labs, an AI company specialising in video and image enhancement models, in a transaction expected to close in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approval. This is not a minor feature add-on; it is Adobe’s clearest signal yet that generative and enhancement AI should be part of the core pipeline, not an optional detour through third-party tools. In my view, Adobe is trying to turn Creative Cloud from a collection of apps into an AI-first production system where upscaling, restoration, and interpolation are native steps in the creative process rather than bolt-on fixes.

Neurostream and On-Device AI: Why Local Processing Changes Everything
The most important part of the Adobe Topaz Labs acquisition is not the brand; it is Neurostream, Topaz’s technology for running large AI models locally on consumer devices. Adobe says this will deliver faster creative experiences and make advanced AI more cost effective, because creatives can run enhancement models directly on their GPUs instead of round-tripping to the cloud. Topaz has already proven it can optimise large video models to run on consumer-grade hardware, lowering the barrier to professional-quality AI processing. For CG artists and video editors, this shifts AI enhancement from a bandwidth-constrained, latency-heavy cloud call into something closer to a real-time tool. In practical terms, that means iterating on AI video enhancement and AI image upscaling as naturally as tweaking curves or color grading—no upload queue, no cloud rendering farm, and fewer licensing surprises tied to per-seat cloud usage.
From Point Solutions to Integrated Creative Cloud AI Tools
Topaz Labs built its reputation on specialised enhancement tools—upscaling, sharpening, stabilisation, frame interpolation, noise removal and footage restoration—for demanding creative workflows. Its flagship models, Astra for video upscaling and Wonder for image retouching and enhancement, are designed for production rather than novelty. Adobe plans to integrate these capabilities into Adobe Firefly, Firefly Services and Creative Cloud applications while keeping Topaz tools available as standalone services. That workflow layer is exactly what Neurostream’s local processing is built to power: AI steps such as frame interpolation, stabilisation or archival footage restoration can be defined once and automated across projects. Firefly generative AI ARR has already surpassed USD 250 million (approx. RM1,150 million), and AI-influenced ARR exceeds one-third of total bookings, signalling that AI is no longer an add-on but a core revenue engine.
