Director Ian Russell’s team shot pianist Lukas Sternath’s performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto with five Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive cameras, each with two 8K sensors, yielding what he calls “16K” stereoscopic data per body. That meant a half-hour concerto multiplied across five bodies—plus rigging and safety heads—creating an enormous data load, with reports of half an hour of rendering for thirty seconds of footage. This wasn’t some auxiliary feed; it was a completely separate Apple Immersive recording, the only video capture of the concert. Quote this as the new normal: “Five URSA Cine Immersive bodies covered the Grieg concerto”. Multi-camera setup now means multi-terabyte mindset.

Unlearning flat cinema: the one‑meter rule and 180‑degree vision
Russell is blunt about how disruptive spatial cinema filming is to old habits. Debut at the BBC Proms was his first stereoscopic 3D production, and he says he had to throw away much of his concert-television vocabulary and start again from scratch. The Apple Vision Pro production pipeline imposed a simple but brutal constraint: keep every camera at least one meter from any object. Put the URSA too close to the piano and viewers felt their legs “inside” the instrument—an uncanny, physically impossible sensation that triggered discomfort and eye strain. On a 70–80 piece orchestra, finding a meter of clearance around each position became a Tetris-like exercise in logistics. Add to that a fixed lens with a 180-degree field of view, where every placement must work both as a wide-angle and as a mid‑range equivalent in the headset. This is not coverage; it is choreography of space.

Team sport: from Apple engineers to indie crews and surreal worlds
Building an immersive camera rig is no solo auteur fantasy; it is extreme collaboration. Russell credits working alongside Apple’s specialists—“who of course have the most experience of this immersive technology anywhere in the world”—for making sense of the new rules. The same pattern appears in Moritz Moessinger’s surreal short Superbuhei, which mixes psychological thriller and dark comedy in a world built from scratch. Facing extensive production design, set builds, complex technical setups and more than 200 VFX shots on a tight budget, Moessinger leaned on an “amazing team” of ACs, gaffer, key grip, DIT and producers to pull off the visuals. They used precise floor-plan tools to place fixtures and plan camera movement across sets. In both cases, the immersive camera rig is as much the crew and workflow as the hardware. Without that network, the rig collapses into chaos.

Why surreal stories and spatial cinema belong together
The most exciting frontier is where surreal storytelling meets spatial cinema. In Superbuhei, Moessinger and director Josef Brandl took cues from Gregory Crewdson and Edward Hopper to craft sets and camera moves that mirror the protagonist’s fractured inner life, playing with surreal sets, unusual perspectives and camera movements. This is exactly where immersive camera rigs shine: synchronized multi-camera setups can place viewers inside those warped spaces rather than looking at them from a safe distance. The lesson from both Superbuhei and Debut at the BBC Proms is that spatial cinema filming is not a novelty format; it is a new grammar. Future shoots will push further—Russell already says he’s now more in favor of subtle camera movement after gaining experience on this project. One important lesson Moessinger draws is that small budgets can be partly balanced by extensive pre-production and early post involvement. Immersive rigs reward that discipline with images you cannot get any other way.
