Even in extreme cold at -30°C, the pack can go from 20% to 98% in nine minutes, a crucial advantage for drivers in harsh climates. CATL also claims the battery retains over 90% of its original capacity after 1,000 charging cycles, suggesting strong long-term durability. The company positions Shenxing 3 not as a lab experiment but as production-ready fast charging technology, with first applications in road cars targeted for around 2027. If these specifications translate into real-world products, the charging pause for EVs could soon resemble the brief fuel stop familiar to petrol drivers.

From Hundreds to 1,500 km: CATL’s Leap in EV Battery Range

Beyond faster refuelling, CATL is pushing the limits of how far an electric vehicle can travel on a single charge. At the Beijing Motor Show, the company presented a battery pack offering up to 1,500 km of range with a weight of 625 kg, making it lighter than comparable packs and improving efficiency, acceleration, braking, and handling. In parallel, its Qilin battery, using cell-to-pack architecture, delivers up to 621 miles of range in an SUV and an exceptional 932 miles in a saloon. This approaches or exceeds the distance many drivers would realistically cover in a full day’s driving. While few motorists truly need over 900 miles between stops, these figures directly tackle two core concerns that still hold back EV adoption: range and charging downtime. Together with Shenxing 3, they signal a step-change in what consumers can expect from next-generation electric car batteries.

How Shenxing 3 Compares to Today’s Leading EV Batteries

Current high-end EVs already offer impressive performance, but CATL’s Shenxing 3 sharply raises the bar for both charging speed and energy density. Today, one of the fastest-charging models on sale, the Xpeng G6, takes about 12 minutes to reach 10–80% state of charge on a suitable fast charger. Shenxing 3 cuts that time to under four minutes, thanks to charging power that can reach up to 1,300 kW. Meanwhile, the Qilin cell-to-pack design removes separate control modules inside the battery, improving packaging efficiency and boosting range to 621–932 miles depending on vehicle type. Compared with existing long-range EVs, such as large premium saloons, these numbers represent a significant jump rather than a marginal gain. CATL’s roadmap also includes a sodium-ion battery, which trades some energy density for lower cost, better cold performance, and potentially greener production than conventional lithium-ion cells.

The Strategic Role of Sodium-Ion in CATL Battery Innovation

While Shenxing 3 and Qilin grab attention with spectacular range and charging claims, CATL’s sodium-ion development may prove just as disruptive for mass-market EVs. Sodium-ion batteries typically offer lower energy density than lithium-ion, meaning shorter range for the same pack size. However, they are more eco-friendly to produce, use more abundant raw materials, and perform better in low temperatures. CATL has already previewed its Naxtra sodium-ion battery and expects it to enter series production by the end of 2026. This technology could underpin affordable compact cars, city EVs, and entry-level models, where ultra-long range is less critical than price, robustness, and ease of manufacture. By combining premium solutions like Shenxing 3 with cost-optimised sodium-ion options, CATL is positioning itself across the entire EV value spectrum, from long-distance cruisers to everyday urban runabouts.

Implications for Global EV Adoption and Charging Infrastructure

If CATL’s claims translate into widely available products, the impact on EV adoption could be profound. Fast charging technology that brings 10–80% refills below four minutes and extends ranges to 600–900-plus miles would largely neutralise range anxiety and drastically reduce time spent at public chargers. This may shift consumer focus away from sheer battery size toward vehicle efficiency, driving dynamics, and ownership cost. It also raises new questions for infrastructure planners: megawatt-level chargers and grid upgrades will be needed to unlock Shenxing 3’s full potential. Initially, these CATL battery innovations will launch in China, but the company’s close ties with brands such as BMW, Volkswagen, Ford, Tesla, and Chinese automakers like Changan suggest global rollout will follow. As these systems reach Europe and other markets, they could accelerate the tipping point where choosing an EV over a combustion car becomes the default decision.
