Smart TV tracking is the constant collection and transmission of viewing habits, app usage, and device identifiers to manufacturers and partners, often through Automatic Content Recognition, telemetry, and hidden SDKs, even when the screen appears off, which erodes privacy and can quietly turn your television into both a surveillance sensor and a network resource for third parties without meaningful consent.
If your TV is on the network, assume it is chatting behind your back. From Residential Proxy Malware to ACR: The Hidden Threats
The most disturbing problem is not the occasional targeted ad; it is the way smart TVs can be repurposed into infrastructure for others. Samsung recently pulled hundreds of TV apps after researchers found they included Bright Data’s residential proxy SDK. Once a user accepted a consent screen, this SDK ran a background service even after the app was closed, turning the television into an exit node until the app was fully removed. Researchers also warned that the SDK’s base behaviour could be controlled remotely, which makes it hard to call anything about this arrangement safe.

At the same time, nearly every major brand ships TVs with ACR systems that watch everything on the screen, whether it comes from a console, Blu-ray player, live TV, or streaming app. ACR is sold as personalization, but it is “harvesting data about your viewing activity” for internal use or sale to partners. That fingerprinting applies even to content that has nothing to do with ads, from documents to home videos.
Because the data pipelines are buried in operating systems and SDKs, consent is often more of a trap than a safeguard. Euphemistic prompts make it easy to turn ACR on by mistake and harder to switch it off. The result: your living room TV behaves more like a data broker’s sensor node than a neutral display.
Smart TV Privacy Settings: Why They Help and Why They Fall Short
You should absolutely use smart TV privacy settings, but you should not trust them as your only defence. On Vizio models, the core ACR feature is tied to an option called Viewing Data. During setup, you need to reject Viewing Data outright to avoid enabling tracking. If you missed that, you can open the Settings menu, choose Privacy and Legal, highlight Viewing Data, and toggle it to Off to disable ACR tracking. On other platforms, the labels change, but the pattern is the same: look for ad personalization, viewing data, or similar switches and turn them off.
Users on LG’s webOS have shown how limited these toggles are. One person turned off every option that looked like monitoring—ad personalization, data collection, and related items—expecting the network chatter to stop.
