SAP’s Autonomous Enterprise Wants AI to Run Your Workflows While You Stay in Charge

SAP’s Autonomous Enterprise Wants AI to Run Your Workflows While You Stay in Charge

From Business Software to SAP Autonomous Enterprise

SAP is recasting its core applications as an "Autonomous Enterprise" where AI agents help run mission‑critical workflows end to end, but people retain strategic control. Unveiled at SAP Sapphire, the initiative combines a unified business AI platform, an autonomous suite that executes operations, and a new user experience aimed at reshaping how employees interact with enterprise systems. CEO Christian Klein frames the push as a response to rising expectations: in finance closes, supply chains or HR, outcomes must be accurate, compliant and explainable, not merely “almost right.” Rather than bolt-on chatbots, SAP is embedding enterprise AI agents directly into systems of record and governance frameworks. The goal is AI workflow automation that understands real business context, unlocking efficiency and new revenue opportunities while building in safeguards so human stakeholders can audit, override and refine agent decisions.

Inside SAP Business AI Platform and Joule Work

At the heart of the SAP autonomous enterprise vision is the SAP Business AI Platform, a consolidated environment that merges SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Business AI. This business AI platform is anchored by SAP Knowledge Graph, which maps customers’ entities, processes and relationships so enterprise AI agents can reason over real operational context instead of isolated data sets. On top of this foundation, SAP is introducing Joule Work, an AI-first interface that lets users complete tasks conversationally, without hopping across applications and screens. Joule Work is complemented by Joule Assistants, more than 50 domain-specific helpers embedded across finance, supply chain, procurement, HCM and customer experience. Together they illustrate SAP’s shift from traditional transactional screens to guided, AI-driven experiences, where enterprise AI agents orchestrate routine work but escalate exceptions and nuanced choices back to human decision-makers.

Autonomous Suite: Finance Closes, ERP Migrations and Industry Workflows

Building on the business AI platform, SAP Autonomous Suite brings enterprise AI agents into core operational flows. The suite activates Joule Assistants and over 200 specialised enterprise AI agents to run processes from initiation through completion. One flagship use case is an Autonomous Close Assistant for finance departments, designed to accelerate period-end closes by automating journal entries, reconciliations and error resolution while maintaining auditability. Beyond finance, the suite targets complex ERP transformations, using AI workflow automation to support tasks like data remediation and configuration during migrations. SAP is also rolling out seven industry-specific autonomous products that embed sector logic, regulatory requirements and domain data models. In manufacturing and supply chain, agents coordinate planning, production and logistics activities, but humans still oversee policies, risk thresholds and exceptions, preserving accountability even as day-to-day execution becomes more continuous and self-optimising.

NVIDIA OpenShell and the Trusted Execution Layer for Enterprise AI Agents

As enterprise AI agents gain permissions to touch systems of record, security and governance become central. SAP is addressing this by embedding NVIDIA OpenShell into SAP Business AI Platform as the runtime security layer for all agents. OpenShell is an open source environment that provides isolated sandboxes, filesystem and network policy enforcement, and infrastructure-level containment to protect core systems if agent logic fails or behaves unexpectedly. SAP engineers are co-designing this runtime with NVIDIA and contributing back to the project, aligning governance controls with enterprise needs. For customers, this means specialised enterprise AI agents can operate across finance, procurement, supply chain and manufacturing with clear boundaries and an auditable trail of actions. The collaboration underscores SAP’s focus on trustworthy AI workflow automation: agents should automate at scale, but within guardrails that IT, compliance and business owners can understand and manage.

Joule Studio and the Future of Human-AI Collaboration

To help organisations build their own SAP autonomous enterprise capabilities, SAP is launching Joule Studio, a managed environment for creating custom agents, applications and agentic workflows. Joule Studio supports no-code and pro-code development and integrates multiple AI frameworks, including Cursor, Claude, AutoGen and LlamaIndex, giving teams flexibility in how they design enterprise AI agents. Because it runs on SAP-managed, enterprise-grade infrastructure, customers can focus on business logic rather than plumbing. Crucially, the design philosophy emphasises human-AI collaboration, not full automation. Joule Assistants and custom agents are meant to handle high-volume, time-sensitive tasks—such as exception management in planning or logistics coordination—while people remain accountable for strategy, risk decisions and continuous improvement. If successful, SAP’s business AI platform could make AI workflow automation feel less like ceding control to a black box and more like delegating work to a transparent, configurable digital operations team.
