Apple Intelligence and the most advanced Siri AI features are limited to a specific list of Siri AI supported devices. On iPhone, the upgrade covers iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 and 17e, iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. On iPad, only iPad Pro and iPad Air models with the M1 chip or later, plus the iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip, qualify. All Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and later, plus A18 Pro-based models) are included. Apple Watch users need an AI-supported iPhone and at least an Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, or Watch SE 3 to tap into the new experience. While some improvements to reliability may reach older hardware, the most powerful language model features depend on newer chips and memory. In practice, iPhone Siri upgrade compatibility means that a recent Pro or latest-generation device can feel like a true assistant, while older hardware is stuck with a more limited voice tool.
Accessibility Gains for Some, Exclusion for Others
For people who find smartphones confusing—especially many seniors—the new Siri design could remove friction. Apple describes a version of Siri that handles casual language, understands follow-up questions, and can change settings without forcing users through layers of menus. That can make accessibility features easier to use: instead of hunting through options, someone can ask to make text larger, turn on Do Not Disturb, raise screen brightness, or enable specific visual or hearing tools. But these wins are conditional on owning compatible hardware. Seniors and other users who hold onto devices longer—often for cost or comfort reasons—are more likely to have unsupported phones or tablets, meaning they see only partial improvements or none at all while newer device owners enjoy the full Siri AI upgrade.
A Two-Tier Siri: Fragmentation and Voice-First Risks
Because only select models get Apple Intelligence, Siri AI older phones now sit in a different class from newer devices. The result is a two-tier Siri experience: one tier where users can rely on voice to carry out complex, context-aware tasks across apps, and another where Siri remains mostly a simple question-and-command tool. This fragmentation matters for both accessibility and personal preference. People who do not like talking to their phones, or who have speech, hearing, or language challenges, may find a voice-first AI shift excludes them unless equivalent non-voice controls keep pace.
