What Windows Ready Print Is and Why It Matters
Windows Ready Print is Microsoft’s modern printing framework for Windows that replaces many legacy, driver-heavy workflows with a simpler, standards-based model focused on Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), eSCL, and cloud-centric scenarios so that users and IT administrators get more reliable, secure, and predictable printing across new and existing devices. Announced as an evolution of the earlier Modern Print Platform, Windows Ready Print (WRP) is presented by Microsoft as its clearest path yet to “a streamlined, dependable printing experience built for modern Windows environments.” Instead of every printer bringing its own complex driver stack, WRP prefers the Windows inbox IPP driver whenever a device supports it. Traditional OEM drivers still work, but they are no longer the default path for supported printers. This shift is designed to reduce connection errors, driver conflicts, and support tickets that have long made Windows printing frustrating in large and small environments alike.

From Modern Print Platform to a Cleaner Architecture
Windows Ready Print is less a bolt-on feature and more a rethinking of how Windows connects to printers. Microsoft describes WRP as the new name and shape of its Modern Print Platform, aligning the entire stack around modern protocols such as IPP for printing and eSCL for scanning, plus cloud offerings like Universal Print. Instead of dozens of model-specific drivers, WRP centers on a single Windows inbox IPP printer driver that can serve many devices. This trimmed-down architecture cuts the number of components in play when a user adds a printer and presses Print, which in turn reduces points of failure and security exposure. Legacy third-party drivers still load for devices that need them, but they are no longer the first choice when a printer speaks modern standards. For IT, that means fewer packages to test, certify, and maintain over time.
Modernized Print Driver Selection and Policy Control
A key part of Windows Ready Print is modernized print driver selection, giving both users and administrators clearer control over how printers are installed. Starting with current Windows 11 Insider builds and rolling into general releases, Windows adds a setting under Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners called “Default install printer using Windows Ready Print.” When this toggle is on, new printer installations prefer the inbox IPP driver whenever the printer supports Windows Ready Print; when it is off, Windows falls back to the traditional driver ranking logic and OEM packages. According to Microsoft’s Windows IT Pro Blog, “the configuration applies to new printer installations only, without affecting existing devices.” The same behavior is exposed through Group Policy via the “Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking” policy, letting enterprises standardize how driver selection works across fleets of PCs.
Protected Print Mode and the 2026 Default Shift
Windows Ready Print is not only about convenience; it also underpins stronger security baselines. When Windows Protected Print Mode is enabled, Windows refuses to install printers with legacy drivers at all, requiring that devices use Windows Ready Print and its standards-based IPP model. In this locked-down state, any printer that does not support WRP will not install, closing off an entire class of older, driver-heavy paths that can increase attack surface. Microsoft has also set a clear timeline for the broader shift: starting in July 2026, new printer installations on supported systems will default to Windows Ready Print. Older printers and OEM drivers remain supported as they are today, but the default experience moves to the modern stack. For organizations, that gives a long runway to test Protected Print Mode, decide policy, and plan hardware refreshes around WRP compatibility.
Practical Gains for Users and IT Administrators
For everyday users, Windows Ready Print aims to make printers feel less unpredictable. New WRP-compatible printers should install faster, with fewer prompts and fewer vendor utilities, because Windows uses its built-in IPP driver instead of hunting for custom packages. That consistency should reduce baffling errors when moving between home, office, and shared printers. For IT departments, Windows Ready Print supports Windows printing modernization by cutting down the long tail of print drivers that must be tested, whitelisted, and updated. Admins gain central policy switches for print driver selection and the option to enforce Windows Protected Print Mode where strict security is required. At the same time, WRP’s design acknowledges reality: environments that still depend on OEM-specific features can disable the WRP default and continue using vendor drivers until they are ready to move. The result is a gradual but meaningful upgrade path.
