Pixel 11’s Higher Price: A Memory Crisis or a Strategy Shift?
The Pixel 11 price increase refers to Google’s decision to launch its next flagship line at higher prices while citing a global RAM supply crunch and rising memory costs, raising debate over whether the extra money funds genuine hardware needs or a growing layer of mandatory smartphone AI features consumers may not want or use.
Google has confirmed that the Pixel 11 series will launch at higher prices because the cost of 1GB of RAM has climbed significantly during an ongoing supply crunch, which it says has pushed up production expenses and forced a price revision. Shakil Barkat, the company’s Vice President of Devices and Services, added that Google had absorbed component costs “for as long as possible” before passing some of the increase to buyers. At the same time, the brand has announced “price adjustments” across the entire Pixel family, to be made dynamically to match supply conditions, with official figures due at the Made by Google event on August 12. On paper, that sounds like a straightforward RAM cost crisis. In practice, it looks more like a business choice.

The Quiet Role of Google Gemini Bloat in Pixel 11 Pricing
Google’s public line is that hardware costs are rising; what it does not stress is how its own AI ambitions inflate those hardware needs. At its recent developer event, the company introduced Gemini Intelligence, a new layer of on-device and ambient AI positioned as the future of Android, meant to run proactively in the background while you use your phone. That “intelligence system” vision is not free. Gemini Intelligence reserves a permanent chunk of RAM for its AI tasks and is unavailable on any device with 8GB or less. In other words, the minimum memory requirement is no longer set by typical apps, games, or the operating system. It is set by Google Gemini bloat: a bundle of AI capabilities that many users neither requested nor can disable without losing headline features.
We can already see the impact. The Pixel 9a missed features like Call Notes and Pixel Screenshots because it shipped with 8GB of RAM and had to rely on a smaller Gemini Nano build that could not handle them. Critics argue that this shows Google is not only passing along supplier costs; it is deepening the problem by insisting on AI-heavy software that demands at least 12GB of RAM for new phones. That requirement, rooted in Gemini Intelligence, is one major reason Google is not cutting RAM on the Pixel 11 to keep prices level. “So 12GB of RAM is the new minimum memory requirement for Android phones. Why? So new Android phones can run Gemini Intelligence.” In effect, AI is now a hidden line item on your bill.

Flagship Phone Pricing and the Shrinking Middle Ground
The Pixel line tells a clear story about flagship phone pricing. Launch prices moved from USD 599 (approx. RM2,750) for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 to USD 699 (approx. RM3,200) for the Pixel 8, then USD 799 (approx. RM3,650) for both the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10, with the Pixel 11 now reportedly set to start at USD 899 (approx. RM4,100). Those are steep climbs across just a few generations. Google says it will “dynamically” adjust prices to match supply realities, which in practice means continuing to raise tags when parts get more expensive. And leaks suggest this increase will hit the entire Pixel 11 family, from the standard model through the Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold devices.
This is not only about new phones. The company has also warned that the RAM shortage may affect the pricing of existing Pixel models, making current devices worth considering before any revisions take effect. Meanwhile, Barkat says Google is working to improve Android’s memory efficiency through tighter integration between the OS, Tensor chips and on-device AI, with the goal of delivering smooth performance on less RAM in future. The contradiction is obvious: while promising to reduce memory needs, Google is promoting smartphone AI features that, right now, demand more memory and contribute to higher prices. Until those software gains materialise on real hardware, consumers are left with a shrinking middle ground between budget devices and AI-bloated flagships.
What This Means for Buyers: Pay for AI or Look Backward
For ordinary buyers, the Pixel 11 price increase is not an abstract supply-chain story; it is a forced choice. You can pay more for a phone tuned around Gemini Intelligence, with its always-on AI background tasks and swollen RAM needs, or you can step back to an older, cheaper Pixel that may soon climb in price itself once the memory crunch hits in-market devices. Google plans to soften the blow with trade-in programmes, discounts and bundled services such as Google One, which it says will help keep the devices affordable. But those are short-term patches on a long-term structural change, where AI requirements, not user needs, shape the hardware baseline for new phones.
The harshest criticism is that the Pixel 11 “could be the same price as the Pixel 10 with no noticeable drop in performance,” but Google’s drive to win the AI arms race is “saddling consumers with a bill for features they didn’t ask for.” If 8GB of RAM is enough for a modern Android experience but not enough for Google’s preferred AI stack, then the Pixel 11 is less a victim of the RAM cost crisis and more a product of Google’s own priorities. Until AI becomes both optional and lightweight, every flagship buyer is effectively funding a future where the phone is an intelligence system first and a simple communication tool second.
