Midjourney’s body scanning technology is a wellness-focused full-body ultrasound system that surrounds people with water and sensors to create MRI-like internal images for health monitoring and body composition tracking. The project, branded Midjourney Medical, marks a sharp turn from the company’s origin in text-to-image AI. Instead of turning prompts into digital art, the new scanner turns ultrasonic echoes into three-dimensional body maps. Guests stand in a shallow pool of golden light as a platform lowers them through a ring packed with ultrasound elements. These sensors send waves through water, into the body, and listen for subtle changes as they bounce back. A nearby computer cluster reconstructs the returning signals into a detailed internal view. Midjourney claims this fast scan could become a regular wellness ritual, closer to a spa visit than a hospital appointment.
Inside the Ultrasound Scanning Hardware
Unlike traditional handheld probes, Midjourney’s ultrasound scanning hardware is built around a fixed ring containing thousands of tiny transducers. According to Midjourney’s own technical description, the prototype includes a ring of 40 scanners that together house around 358,000 ultrasonic elements, firing up to a thousand times per second while a person moves through the water-filled tank. Each element alternates between emitting sound and listening, producing terabytes of data that are streamed to a large computing cluster. The system aims for tissue details down to about half a millimeter, a resolution that the company says is comparable to standard clinical MRI. This design turns the entire tank into a large, continuous sensor, allowing full-body coverage in roughly a minute instead of scanning one small area at a time, which is typical for conventional ultrasound exams.
AI Medical Imaging: How Software Builds the Body Map
Midjourney’s shift into AI medical imaging does not reuse its image-generation model, but it applies similar pattern-recognition skills to a different kind of data. Instead of pixels, the system ingests streams of ultrasonic waveforms that have travelled through skin, fat, muscle, bone, and organs. AI models help decide how to convert this raw acoustic information into usable slices and 3D maps, and how to distinguish one tissue type from another. Early prototypes focus on body composition, showing how muscle, fat, and other tissues are distributed, rather than delivering formal diagnoses. The ambition is to adapt image-processing techniques from generative AI for health imaging innovation, turning noisy signals into clear, consistent pictures. Over time, such models could be trained on large datasets of scans to spot subtle changes that might indicate emerging health issues, long before symptoms appear.
Butterfly’s Role and the Hardware Pivot
While Midjourney presents the scanner as a unique creation, key parts of the body scanning technology come from outside partners and existing research. The company’s system uses Fullbody Ultrasound Computational Tomography, a method already explored in academic projects involving submersion tanks and large sensor arrays. The ring inside the Midjourney Scanner is built from 40 ultrasound imaging modules supplied by Butterfly Network under a co-development agreement. Butterfly stated in its own release that it licensed these modules to Midjourney and expects related revenue over several years. This partnership highlights how Midjourney is moving away from pure software into a combined hardware and service model. Building and maintaining thousands of physical scanners would be a major change for a company known for digital tools, and it brings new responsibilities around reliability, maintenance, and regulatory scrutiny.
A Spa-Like Experience and the Future of Health Imaging
The most visible difference between this scanner and conventional medical imaging is the setting. Midjourney plans a spa in San Francisco where visitors bathe in golden light, float in warm pools, and pass through scanner rings between saunas and hot tubs. The scan is designed to take about a minute, with a slow, bath-like motion rather than the confined tunnel of an MRI. Guests walk away with detailed body maps that they can track over time or share with clinicians, tying preventive body scanning technology to a consumer wellness experience. Midjourney has stated that it envisions deploying 50,000 scanners with capacity for a billion scans a month, claiming that extensive early imaging could avoid 30 percent of deaths and halve healthcare costs. If even partly realized, that scale would reshape how often people expect to see inside their own bodies.
