These teams have already operated large-scale AI systems in real-time environments for companies such as Virgin Atlantic, Tesco and Supercell, where reliability, governance and integration with existing workflows are non‑negotiable. By bringing Tomoro in-house, OpenAI is effectively buying experience in scaling AI systems, not just raw engineering capacity. Those engineers will work alongside customer executives, technology leaders and frontline teams to redesign critical operations around OpenAI models, linking them to internal data and tools. The aim is to produce durable systems that can evolve as new AI capabilities are released, rather than one-off pilots that quickly become obsolete.

A New Competitive Front: Services, Integration and Ecosystem Reach

The OpenAI Deployment Company positions OpenAI as a direct contender in enterprise AI consulting and deployment services, not just model development. Its investor group spans private equity, banks and technology investors, alongside consulting and systems integration firms such as McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company and Capgemini. Collectively, these partners sponsor more than 2,000 businesses and serve many thousands more, giving OpenAI an unusually broad channel for enterprise AI deployment opportunities. Typical engagements will pair OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineers with external consultants to handle change management at scale. This hybrid model mirrors a wider market trend where software vendors bundle AI pilot to production capabilities with implementation and managed services.
