A New Benchmark: Inside the ICEpower SC400A2

The ICEpower SC400A2 is a 2-channel, 400W class-D amplifier module designed to raise the bar for premium audio systems. Built as the first platform on ICEpower’s new Super Conductor topology, it targets high-end hi-fi components, streaming amplifiers, studio monitors, and active loudspeakers that demand compact form factors without compromising fidelity. Measuring only 80 x 100 mm, the module is engineered as a transparent gain stage: what enters at the input is reproduced at the output with minimal alteration. ICEpower specifies an impressive 0.0002% THD+N at 100W across the entire audio band and a noise floor so low that it challenges conventional measurement setups. Combined with a smooth frequency response extending to a -3 dB point above 100 kHz, the SC400A2 positions itself as a high-performance class-D amplifier module for designers seeking linear-like sound in efficient, modern architectures.

Super Conductor Topology: Class-D with Lossless-Like Transparency

Central to the ICEpower SC400A2 is the company’s proprietary super conductor topology, conceived to deliver gain without coloration and maintain total signal integrity. The concept borrows from the physics analogy of a superconductor—lossless conduction when cooled to extremes—and applies it to audio amplification. Technically, the heart of the design is a Globally Controlled Oscillation Modulator (GCOM) paired with a nested feedback structure built around two second-order integrator stages. By effectively creating a fourth-order integrator that is merged with the class-D output filter, ICEpower achieves tight control of distortion and noise while preserving a simple, robust signal path. Execution depends heavily on best-in-class components, from capacitors and op-amps to resistors and MOSFETs. The result is a class-D amplifier architecture that approaches the transparency associated with top-tier linear amplifiers, yet retains the efficiency and compactness demanded in modern premium audio amplifier designs.

Responding to a New Generation of High-Performance Class-D

The SC400A2 did not emerge in a vacuum. ICEpower’s development was driven in part by the recent wave of high-performance class-D technologies that have begun to challenge traditional linear designs in both measurement and listening tests. Competitors such as Purifi Audio and Hypex have demonstrated that class-D can rival, and in some cases surpass, revered analog topologies, raising expectations for transparency, noise performance, and load invariance. Guided by CTO Patrik Bostrom—an early pioneer in class-D—ICEpower set out to create what it describes as its best amplifier to date. Rather than adding DSP tricks or hybrid architectures, the company doubled down on an all-analog signal path and meticulous circuit refinement. The super conductor topology is presented as a clean, elegant answer: a globally controlled, deeply feedbacked class-D structure aimed at making the amplifier effectively invisible to the signal while still delivering robust power and efficiency.

From High End Vienna to Premium Audio Racks

The SC400A2 is scheduled for its first public demonstration at the High End Vienna show, marking the culmination of years of development. This debut is strategically aimed at the premium audio component market, where class-D amplifiers are rapidly gaining acceptance among enthusiasts who once favored only linear designs. Manufacturers of hi-fi separates, high-end streaming amplifiers, and compact active speakers increasingly seek platforms that combine small footprints, low heat, and uncompromising sound. ICEpower positions the SC400A2 exactly at this intersection. The module is designed not merely as a spec sheet champion, but as a flexible building block: OEMs can leverage the super conductor topology as-is or use it as a basis for fully custom solutions developed in partnership with ICEpower. In doing so, the company hopes to embed its new architecture at the heart of the next generation of premium audio amplifier products.

A Complete Platform: Pairing SC400A2 with the 750S Power Supply

To simplify integration for audio manufacturers, ICEpower complements the SC400A2 with the 750S power supply, forming a complete, high-efficiency amplification platform. The 750S is a compact universal-mains PSU capable of delivering 750 W, built around a power factor corrector (PFC), an LLC converter, and a dedicated auxiliary converter providing more than 20 W for DSP and front-end boards. The PFC ensures the supply is effectively “invisible” to the AC network by smoothing current draw and reducing mains-borne disturbances. The resonant LLC stage minimizes noise transfer from primary to secondary, while careful transformer design reduces capacitance and allows for lower Y-capacitor values, thereby cutting low-frequency noise. Together, the SC400A2 and 750S address both signal-path and power-path challenges, enabling manufacturers to develop compact, low-noise, premium audio systems that fully exploit the benefits of class-D efficiency without sacrificing sonic refinement.
