Beneath this new interface, Apple has turned Siri into a chatbot-style assistant with a dedicated app where users can start conversations, review past exchanges, and resume earlier threads. Siri AI now understands personal context: it can pull a friend’s address from Messages, draft emails from scratch, edit and share multiple photos, and set reminders based on ongoing conversations. According to MacStories, Siri AI can even plan trips using information it finds across apps. Expressive new voices and adjustable speaking pace make spoken responses feel less mechanical, while improved dictation handles capitalization, punctuation, and formatting automatically across the system.
Apple Intelligence Features: On-Screen, Visual, and Writing Smarts
Apple Intelligence features extend well beyond voice queries. On-screen awareness lets Siri AI respond to what a user is currently viewing, so questions can refer directly to a web page, message thread, or document. Visual Intelligence is now built into the Camera app through a Siri mode that can, for example, split a restaurant bill or provide nutritional information for a photographed meal. Apple is also bringing Visual Intelligence to the iPad’s screenshot tools and to the Mac with a keyboard shortcut. Writing Tools appear system-wide in apps like Mail and Messages, where Siri AI can generate text from prompts, adapt tone to match how a user typically writes to each recipient, and automatically proofread grammar. Apple says this contextual writing support applies across the system, turning Siri into a personalized AI assistant for everyday communication and productivity.
Privacy, On-Device AI, and How Apple’s Approach Compares
Apple is framing its WWDC Apple AI announcements around privacy and control rather than raw model size or benchmarks. Foundation Models run on-device when possible, falling back to Private Cloud Compute when more power is needed, with Apple emphasizing that user data remains protected in both cases. “AI is incredibly powerful technology with the potential to shape society in profound ways,” Craig Federighi said, defending Apple’s slower rollout and arguing against “pursuing AI for the sake of AI.” Compared with competitor assistants that lean heavily on always-online, cloud-first processing, Apple’s personalized AI assistant is tightly integrated with the operating system and local data, and more constrained to user-approved contexts. That means fewer experimental features, but a clearer focus on secure, task-oriented help that feels native to iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch rather than a separate chatbot bolted onto the experience.
