The New UEFA League Phase and European Performance Spots
Under UEFA’s updated club competition structure, the Champions League league phase features 36 clubs instead of the traditional group stage. Most places are reached in the familiar way: via domestic league position, the Champions League winners’ spot, the Europa League winners’ spot and qualifying rounds. On top of that, two extra automatic places – the European Performance Spots – reward the strongest associations in the previous season’s UEFA club competitions. These European Performance Spots go to the two associations with the highest association club coefficient average over the prior campaign. Each of those associations earns one additional automatic league-phase berth, given to the next-best team in their domestic table that has not already qualified directly. At the time of the latest update, England had secured one of these European Performance Spots, with Spain, Germany and Portugal vying for the other, and teams like Aston Villa and Real Betis currently standing to benefit.
How Champions League Winners’ Spots Are Reassigned
Champions League winners always receive an automatic place in the next season’s league phase. But if the title holders have already qualified through their domestic league position, UEFA does not simply hand an extra spot to their association. Instead, the vacant berth is used to promote a domestic champion from outside the top ten ranked associations. Specifically, the club with the best individual coefficient among all domestic champions in qualifying from associations ranked 11 to 55 is moved straight into the league phase. Domestic champions from associations one to ten already qualify automatically, so they are not part of this calculation. A recent example saw Olympiacos reach the league phase after Paris, the previous winners, had already earned their place via the league. In the current indicative ranking, Shakhtar, as Ukrainian league leaders with a strong coefficient, would be next in line if such rebalancing were needed.
What Happens When Europa League Winners Have Already Qualified
Europa League winners also earn automatic entry to the Champions League league phase. If they have already qualified through their domestic league, UEFA again reallocates the spot by promoting a team from Champions League qualifying. This time, all clubs in qualifying are considered, from both the champions path and the league path. The first criterion is individual club coefficient over the previous five seasons. The team with the highest coefficient in Champions League qualifying is moved directly into the league phase. However, there is a crucial safeguard against “leapfrogging”: a club from the league path can only be promoted if it is the highest-ranked domestically among teams from its association that have not yet qualified directly. If that condition is not met, UEFA moves down to the club with the next-best coefficient. When Atalanta won the Europa League after already booking a Champions League place, this mechanism handed an automatic berth to Benfica.
Cascade Effects and What They Mean for Domestic League Positions
These rebalancing rules create a cascade through the access list. When the Champions League winners’ spot is reassigned to a high‑coefficient champion from associations 11–55, that club leaves the qualifying rounds, opening room for another champion to move into a later qualifying stage. Similarly, if the Europa League winners’ place is reassigned to a high‑coefficient qualifier such as Benfica or Club Brugge, other clubs in qualifying are pushed forward into later rounds. Alongside this, European Performance Spots can make extra Champions League berths available in top domestic leagues. At present, England has already secured one European Performance Spot, and Spain, Germany and Portugal are close contenders. That means fifth place in some leading leagues can become enough for an automatic league-phase place when combined with the winners’ places and rebalanced spots, giving fans a bigger set of realistic targets in the race for Champions League qualification.
