A Next-Gen Denon X-Series Aimed at Serious Home Theaters
Denon’s refreshed X-Series AVRs mark the brand’s first wave of products since joining Harman, and they clearly target listeners who take system design seriously. The lineup centers on the AVR-X2900H and AVR-X3900H, plus region-specific variants like the AVR-X2900H DAB and AVC-X3900H. Compared with Denon’s more accessible S-Series, these Denon X-Series AVR models prioritize refinement, flexibility and integration for custom-designed home theaters and whole-home audio systems. Internally, Denon has upgraded components and adopted a 32-bit multichannel DAC architecture, promising improved imaging, more detailed highs and firmer low-frequency control. Development and tuning still take place at Denon’s Shirakawa Audio Works facility, maintaining the brand’s emphasis on vivid, spacious sound for films, music and gaming. The result is a platform positioned less as a plug-and-play receiver and more as a scalable backbone for enthusiasts and professional installers building complex, long-term systems.
Dirac Live Room Correction Meets Audyssey for Flexible Calibration
The headline change for the new X-Series is the addition of Dirac Live room correction, bringing a higher level of home theater calibration to Denon’s mid- to high-end receivers. All new models in the range support Dirac Live Room Correction, with the AVR-X3900H also eligible for Dirac Live Bass Control and Active Room Treatment as optional upgrades. Dirac Live analyzes both magnitude and phase distortions introduced by the room, then compensates to align the system’s response more closely with an ideal target curve. Importantly, Denon retains Audyssey as the built-in solution, offering quick, reliable auto-calibration for users who prefer a simpler workflow. Power users and integrators can later unlock Dirac licenses to gain finer control and better scalability as systems grow more complex. This dual-path strategy ensures buyers are not locked into a single tuning philosophy, but can evolve from plug-and-play to expert-level optimization.
Power, Channels and Bass Management for Ambitious Setups
Beyond software, Denon has increased AV receiver power output and expanded channel capabilities to anchor more ambitious layouts. The AVR-X2900H delivers 95 watts per channel across seven amplified channels, supporting immersive formats and flexible 5.1.2 or 7.1 configurations. It offers six HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs with eARC, creating a versatile hub for films, games and music. Stepping up, the AVR-X3900H targets no-compromise rooms with 9.4 channels of onboard amplification, 11.4 channels of processing and 105 watts per channel. Four independent subwoofer outputs enable granular bass management, especially when paired with Dirac Live Bass Control and Active Room Treatment to tame problematic low-frequency modes. These specs reflect a shift from basic “all-in-one” receivers toward platforms that can drive dense speaker arrays, discrete subwoofer networks and carefully tuned listening environments demanded by enthusiasts and custom integrators.
Control, Connectivity and Harman Ecosystem Integration
Control and connectivity have also been upgraded to better serve professional installers and power users. Both the AVR-X2900H and AVR-X3900H include IP-based Web UI setup, advanced HDMI diagnostics and expanded control interfaces, streamlining deployment and ongoing support in complex installations. The receivers run on Denon’s HEOS multiroom platform, enabling whole-home streaming, room grouping and independent source playback via a single app, alongside Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2 compatibility. A forthcoming firmware update will let users employ Denon Home 200, 400 and 600 speakers as wireless rear surrounds, a welcome option where running cables is difficult. As part of the wider Harman family, Denon can also align its AVRs with complementary technologies such as Dirac processing and future ecosystem integrations. Together, these features transform the X-Series into not just powerful amplifiers, but intelligent, networked control centers for modern premium home theaters.
