Microsoft has moved Copilot in Excel from a novelty to a finance-grade tool by introducing financial skills for repeatable workflows, new financial data connectors, and better traceability features. These capabilities are now rolling out to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers on Excel for Web, Windows, and Mac, with custom skills already available through the Insiders channel and a broader rollout planned next month. This is not a cosmetic update; it is a clear attempt to turn Excel into an AI-native finance platform where automated financial workflows are defined once and reused everywhere. The new skills feature allows finance teams to define structured processes for DCF modeling, variance analysis, and monthly reporting, cutting repetitive setup and improving consistency and accuracy. Data connectors Excel: from manual pulls to live, trusted sources
For years, finance teams have burned hours copy‑pasting from terminals, filings, and PDFs. Copilot in Excel now connects directly to the market data, fundamentals, and research that financial professionals rely on, so analysis starts from the latest sources instead of manual data pulls. In addition to earlier LSEG and Moody’s integrations, Microsoft is expanding with more financial data connectors for bringing public and private market data into Copilot in Excel.
These new data connectors Excel users can call include CB Insights for private company intelligence, Daloopa for audit-ready fundamentals, FactSet for institutional financial and alternative data, Morningstar for investment research and portfolio analytics, PitchBook for private capital markets, and S&P Global’s deterministic retrieval developed by Kensho for structured, API-driven access. Combined, they give Copilot Excel finance users a single environment where DCF modeling tools, comps, and portfolio analysis can draw directly from trusted feeds. The catch is familiar: many third-party connectors require separate licensing or subscriptions from the providers, so finance leaders will need to align data contracts with their Copilot ambitions.
Traceable, automated financial workflows—and how to adopt them
The real value here is not that Copilot can write formulas; it is that automated financial workflows become traceable, reviewable, and aligned with enterprise standards. Whether updating a forecast, refreshing a board reporting model, or reviewing changes before quarter close, finance teams still need visibility into what changed, confidence in the methodology, and a clear trail. Copilot now meets that expectation: every edit is traceable, linked back to affected cells, and attributed to Copilot alongside human collaborators in the Show Changes pane.
These features are now generally available to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers, with custom skills rolling from the Insiders channel to full availability across Excel for Web, Windows, and Mac next month, and partner-built skills expected in Q3 2026. The features will roll out progressively, with availability and licensing varying by tenant.
