From Wearables to Genomics: Defining Samsung’s New Health Ambition
Samsung’s new health ambition is a digital health strategy that connects wearable health data, genomics biotech investment, and extended reality experiences to build an end‑to‑end platform for personalized medicine and preventative care. This move shifts the company from selling hardware to shaping how health data is collected, analyzed, and used across consumer and clinical settings. For years, Samsung Health and Galaxy wearables have focused on fitness, sleep, and preventative wellness. Now the company is aiming higher: linking those streams of data with emerging genomic and multiomics tools, and testing XR in real-world healthcare workflows. The goal is not only to track steps or heart rate, but to anchor Samsung health expansion in deeper diagnostics and precision medicine, placing it in direct competition with Apple and Google’s growing health ecosystems.
Inside the Element Biosciences Deal and Its Biotech Potential
Samsung Electronics has invested USD 175 million (approx. RM805 million) in US-based Element Biosciences, becoming its largest shareholder and signaling a serious genomics biotech investment rather than a small experimental stake. Element Biosciences develops next-generation DNA sequencing and multiomics platforms intended for biomedical and clinical research, drug discovery, and other life sciences work. According to SamMobile, Samsung previously participated in the company’s Series D funding round, and co-CEO TM Roh said this latest move, combined with Samsung’s AI and digital health expertise, will “create synergies that will help shape the future of personalized medicine.” Strategically, this gives Samsung a window into the tools that will generate and interpret genomic data, instead of leaving that layer to specialized biotech firms. It positions Samsung closer to the core infrastructure that will underpin future diagnostics and precision therapies.
XR Blood Donation Shows Samsung’s Multi-Pronged Health Strategy
At the same time, Samsung is extending its digital health strategy into extended reality. In partnership with healthcare firm Abbott and a Red Cross organization, donors at Samsung’s headquarters used Galaxy XR headsets during blood donation sessions, entering a calm Zen garden where they planted virtual flowers with their gaze while orchestral music played. Samsung presented this as proof that Galaxy XR can support healthcare environments, not only entertainment, by making procedures less stressful while still allowing medical staff to monitor donors. Abbott has run blood donation campaigns across nearly 30 countries since 2016, and now sees Galaxy XR, powered by Android XR, as suitable for clinical settings. The experience is already being shown at industry events, where more than 100 blood bank decision-makers will examine the use case, underscoring how Samsung is testing XR-enhanced health experiences alongside its genomics and wearable health data push.

Competing with Apple and Google in the New Health Stack
By combining genomics, XR, and wearable health data, Samsung is building a broader digital health infrastructure that goes beyond step counting and smartphone apps. Its wearables already support Samsung Health with more predictive, preventative wellness insights powered by AI. Adding genomics data from platforms like Element Biosciences could allow future devices and services to offer personalized medicine recommendations, risk scores, and more precise coaching tailored to a user’s biological profile. This directly challenges rivals such as Apple and Google, which are also racing to control health data and diagnostics. Samsung’s advantage could lie in owning multiple layers: consumer hardware, AI analytics, XR interfaces, and now a stake in the genomic tools that feed precision medicine. If it can connect these parts in a secure, user-friendly way, Samsung health expansion may evolve from a device ecosystem into a full digital health stack.
