From Web Stores to AI Shopping Assistants
AI-powered beauty shopping is the shift from static product listings to interactive, conversational experiences where an AI shopping assistant understands needs, asks follow-up questions, and returns tailored options across brands, price points, and styles in real time. Instead of navigating menus and filters, shoppers describe their skin concerns, style goals, or upcoming events and receive AI product recommendations that adapt as the conversation evolves. This is the shared vision behind beauty giants L’Oréal and Nykaa partnering with OpenAI to plug their ecosystems directly into ChatGPT. With ChatGPT’s more than 900 million weekly users, OpenAI’s platform is turning into a personalized commerce platform where discovery, advice, and purchase can happen in a single thread. Beauty e-commerce is moving from search boxes and category pages to AI-guided journeys that feel closer to chatting with a knowledgeable store consultant.
Nykaa’s ChatGPT Beauty Shopping Play
Nykaa’s long-term collaboration with OpenAI is designed to bring Nykaa Beauty and Nykaa Fashion directly into ChatGPT as connected apps, turning the chatbot into a live AI shopping assistant. Shoppers can ask for skincare for dry skin, an outfit for a wedding, or a signature fragrance, and receive curated AI product recommendations sourced from Nykaa’s catalog in a conversational flow. This is not limited to a plug-in; Nykaa is positioning itself within OpenAI’s emerging agentic commerce ecosystem, where AI agents help guide purchasing decisions instead of relying only on search results. At the same time, the company is building its own personalized commerce platform by expanding AI across operations, from customer service and marketing to supply chain and engineering. Existing tools such as Skin Scan, Virtual Try-On, AskNykaa, and AI Fashion Stylist will be reinforced with OpenAI models to create more consistent, hyper-personalized journeys.
L’Oréal’s AI-Native Commerce and VivaTech Milestone
L’Oréal has announced a landmark collaboration with OpenAI at VivaTech 2026, marking its tenth year at the tech event and a major step in its Transformative AI roadmap. The focus is on AI-powered consumer journeys and what it calls agentic commerce, where ChatGPT beauty shopping becomes an everyday entry point to brands across the group. Maybelline New York will bring Makeup Virtual Try-On directly into ChatGPT, powered by L’Oréal’s ModiFace technology, so users can try looks in real time while chatting. L’Oréal will also strengthen product discovery within ChatGPT with richer signals for brands ranging from Lancôme to Kérastase. In parallel, SkinCeuticals, CeraVe, and Garnier are participating in a global ChatGPT ad pilot that tests AI-native advertising at the exact moment of user intent, blurring the line between advice, discovery, and purchase.

Behind the Scenes: AI for Research, Content, and Teams
While consumer-facing features grab attention, both companies are also using OpenAI to reshape how their teams work. Nykaa plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex across marketing, customer service, legal, finance, supply chain, and engineering, using AI to speed development of new features and improve internal support. L’Oréal is applying GPT-Rosalind, OpenAI’s life sciences reasoning model, to map the skin microbiome at scale and identify beneficial bacteria for future skincare, starting with La Roche-Posay. It is also powering CreAItech, an in-house generative content platform for imagery and video that reflects brand heritage. According to L’Oréal, 73,000 employees have already been trained in generative AI and equipped with internal tools such as L’OréalGPT and personal AI companions, signaling that AI is becoming a core skill across the organization, not a separate tech experiment.
What Hyper-Personalized Commerce Means for Beauty
Taken together, these moves suggest a future where beauty platforms behave less like catalogs and more like personal consultants embedded inside everyday apps. An AI shopping assistant in ChatGPT can remember preferences over time, ask clarifying questions, and link Nykaa or L’Oréal inventories to advice that feels human and context-aware. This goes beyond standard recommendation engines, which depend mainly on past clicks and basic filters; agentic commerce uses natural language, images, and intent to steer users through a multi-step decision process. For shoppers, the benefit is less scrolling and more tailored guidance; for brands, ChatGPT’s massive user base becomes a discovery engine and ad surface at the moment of interest. The challenge will be balancing helpful AI product recommendations with transparency and trust so that conversations feel like help, not hidden promotion.
